In passages leaked from her forthcoming book America by Heart, Sarah Palin -- the erstwhile quitter governor of Alaska, who now, by all indications, fancies herself as President of the United States -- has taken another cheap shot at First Lady Michelle Obama.

In a passage on perceptions of racial inequality in the United States, Palin slams President Barack Obama, who, she asserts, "seems to believe" that "America -- at least America as it currently exists -- is a fundamentally unjust and unequal country."

And then she goes after Michelle Obama:

Certainly his wife expressed this view when she said during the 2008 campaign that she had never felt proud of her country until her husband started winning elections. In retrospect, I guess this shouldn't surprise us, since both of them spent almost two decades in the pews of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright's church listening to his rants against America and white people.

The passage -- coming on page 26 in a chapter entitled "We, the People" -- echoes remarks made by Palin on the eve of the midterm elections, at a rally in San Jose, California, at which point she mocked remarks made by Michelle Obama during the 2008 campaign: "You know, when I hear people say, or had said during the campaign that they've never been proud of America," Palin spat out. "Haven't they met anybody in uniform yet? I get tears in my eyes when I see that young man, that young woman, walking through the airport in uniform...you too... so proud to be American."

In fact, Michelle Obama's remarks were made (in Madison, Wisconsin, during the 2008 campaign) in a context of Americans being "unified around some basic common issues":

What we have learned over this year is that hope is making a comeback. It is making a comeback. And let me tell you something--for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country. And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction, and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment. I've seen people who are hungry to be unified around some basic common issues, and it's made me proud.

Afterwards, the First Lady further clarified her remarks by noting that she was referencing the "record number" of young voters participating in the political process in the 2008 campaign:

For the first time in my lifetime, I am seeing people rolling up their sleeves in way that I haven't seen and really trying to figure this out, and that's the source of pride I was talking about.

The passages from Palin's latest book first appeared at Palingates, where several other pages from American by Heart have also been posted. Palin followed up her comments about Michelle Obama by throwing an elbow at U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, also focusing on racial overtones:

It also makes sense, then, that the man President Obama made his attorney general, Eric Holder, would call us a "nation of cowards" for failing to come to grips with what he described as the persistence of racism.

Sarah Palin...states in her book that Mrs. Obama made a statement about her experience as an American..about finally being proud to be an American... and comparing that statement to the American war hero...cheap shot as always....doesn't she realize that many of us have been
ambivalent, because of our experiences. We all come from a different place, by virture of our experiences, such as being descendants of former slaves that helped build this country with free labor would not be the same as her experience in her shaded white soccer mom community...but that's for the intelligent....oops did I say intelligent...stay out of politics..you couldn't even complete your American term as govenor of Alaska...

It must be hard for her to function if she cries every time a military person walks by. At some point you have to just deal with it.

The Obamas are a great representation of the finer values of our country. It is wonderful that alas, our country finally arrived at the day where the color of someone's skin has no bearing on their ability to be President. I am a life long Republican but I am always proud of our bright, well informed, reasonable President. He is such a welcome relief after GW that it is refreshing just to hear him speak with complete sentences and correct grammar.

Wow, firefx9 you are pointing the finger saying that others are prejudice and in reality you are the one who is. The problem with our country is that the tables have turned and now people like you want to say that white people are prejudice. When will we ever discuss what the thought is of people today. Not years ago but today. Instead of bringing up the past lets have an honest discussion on where prejudice in our country is today. Listen to a sermon by Reverand Wright and you will find the answer. Oh and did I miss something but did you put down Palin for not being qualified but Obama was? What world are you living in? The qualifications would be a very short list. Congratulations for voting in the most unqualified candidate in the history of the elections - and we wonder why?

The only reason Obama and his wife had to go OVERBOARD and explain is because the Republican party is full of LOST/uneducated folks. Any intelligent human being clearly understood what they meant. The only ones who had issues are the same people who pretend they don't have issues with people of color. Palin can't say anything about anyone...EVER! Her claim of faith is FALSE! You can't follow God going around living a lie and behaving as she does. Shes a phoney. When her daughter got pregnant right under her own roof, they changed the dialogue they usually put into play when an African American girl her age gets pregnant. Meaning, it's okay when an underaged White girl gets pregnant but when a Black or Latino makes the same mistake, they bash them for not being responsible.

Where was her responsibility to her child? Where was her responsibility to this country when she knew she wasn't qualified (and never will be) to run as a vice president. I laugh at a supposed Christian having the nerve too go on record criticizing the president and his wife. BOTH are scholars. I guess the funnier thing is...when I hear Republicans talking about "TAKING BACK AMERICA", who the hell do they think they are taking it back from???? The Black president? All of US who voted him and them out? People in America need to get back to work. Wake UP Folks!

Reading this article reconfirms that Sarah Palin has enough attention to posture herself as America's top tabloid writer.

Very nice

That was racist? Are you kidding me? How many times have Obama and his wife had to re-explain what they meant? Either they don't know what they mean, don't know how to say what they mean or just lie and cover up what they really mean. they are pathetic!
01:51 AM on 11/24/2010
These "jabs" at the Mr & Mrs Obama are basically meant to get the general public at large to steer away from the fact that Sarah Palin's knowledge of politics is non-existent. Come on!!!!!

D'yall reckon that if we stopped paying Ms. Palin so much mind, she'd just go away?

If wishes were horses . . .

America By Heart - what an ironic title from a woman who has to put crib notes on her palm for network interviews.

How do you see racism in any of this? She QUOTED FACTS!

Wow, this one generated a lot of comments. 15,456 right now!

The name of the book says it all... "America By Heart". It isn't "America By Brain". She plans to govern or debate based on feelings... not based on facts and definitely not based on knowledge.

Here... Here!! Readers of all ages. Please do not buy this book and give this imbecil any more of your time and money. Making blatant attacks based on lies in the form of out of context quotes is absolutely ridiculous in this day and age. This attack is paramount to defamation. She should be taken to court, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Freedom of Speech is great, until you cross the line and actually slander a person's good name, which is against the law:

http://www.expertlaw.com/library/personal_injury/defamation.html

Any person can simply lookup the facts on the internet and realize that she's a liar. Knowing this, and going to buy the book anyways leaves me in awe. Why this doesn't matter to some people is beyond me. How can anyone pay for this piece of drivel, knowing full well that they're funding an ignorant attack dog that will attack for no rhyme and especially no reason (facts, truths).

I see Palin is borrowing from the Obama playbook of getting elected. Let's publish a bunch of books to show what a great thinker and policy maker I'll be.........And we all know how that turned out. I wish Obama would not run in 2012 and go back to book writing. Maybe he and Palin could start their own book publishing business and leave the rest of us alone.

Turned out that he won and barring JC himself dropping from the clouds to becoming the GOP nominee he'll win in 2012,. 'sides HCR (as imperfect as it is) will stand and do more for the betterment of this country than any GOP supply-side sleight of hand could ever do

You would have to be extremely uninformed to think that there is any comparison between these two.
