My production company Big City Pictures shot a 2005 interview with now Michelle Obama inaugural day dress designer Isabel Toledo and I thought today might be a fitting time to unearth it a bit. The occasion was an exhibit of her and illustrator husband Rueben Toledo's work at the Barneys Store in midtown NYC. Having seen a number of her pieces up-close, we have to say the details are exquisite as are the silhouettes. Some may have particular opinions about the new First Lady's lacy golden frock, but we leave that to you all to discuss. Enjoy the short video of Isabel Toledo & Rueben Toledo at Barneys NYC click through to watch here:
Questions of taste aside, we think it's great that Cuban-American Toledo did the dress for the first African-American first lady: it's an inclusive gesture to our country's latinos and a hopeful nod toward our neighbors in Cuba to the south.

Michelle was a vision as ususal- the dress coat was lined with cashmere so the First Lady was as warm as anyone else would be at 25 degrees. Good job Isabel.
I think Michelle looked great in the yellow outfit -- the only issue -- too much sparkle and bling for a formal day event. Taking into account the designer is Latin, the over-accentuation is normal -- but should have been toned down for this occasion by removing the sparkle.
The inaugural gown was a version of tarzan's over the shoulder wedding dress -- this puffy dress certainly did not accentuate Michelle's lovely figure. The new stream of male fashion designers for women are clueless -- they simply fling fabric to appease their egos. Now Halston would have been a superb designer had he been around. Mr. President adores his wife even if she were wearing a bean sack.
Michelle, if you are reading this -- I have a fashion vision for you as First Lady of the land I think you will just love.
Michele is great but the monkey-vomit-green dress in cut and fit was an awful disaster. and she was freezing in the parade. she should have worn a warm coat.
the ball gown looked like a great big bandage and needlessly made her look fat.
first lady needs new dress adviser.
Michelle needs to use on her good judgement. She doesn't need to let anyone decide what she needs to wear. She needs to make her own decisions.
