Jazz Up Your Gym Hair for that New Year's Resolution

Typically, we pull our hair back into a ponytail, call it good and hit the treadmill and weights. That's not bad. Ponytails are on a tremendous roll, appearing on most of the top red carpets. But what about this.

It isn't 2016 yet, but "who's waiting?" Lots of us have already started on our New Year's resolutions with a gym membership or running schedule. This is serious stuff, but that doesn't mean we can't look fantastic.

Typically, we pull our hair back into a ponytail, call it good and hit the treadmill and weights. That's not bad. Ponytails are on a tremendous roll, appearing on most of the top red carpets. But what about this:

•Try braiding. To do a classic fishtail braid, divide the ponytail into two sections, A and B. Take a small piece from section A and cross it over to section B. Then take a small piece of section B and bring it over to section A. Repeat that until you have reached the end, then use a hair band or hold.

•Here's another one, this time a side braid. Pull the hair back and over to one side. Braid the hair starting behind the ear and just under the cheekbone. Finish with a soft tie or elastic hold. Never use a rubber band (you only need to make that mistake once to learn the lesson).

Bobby pins and fun clips can be integrated in ANY style from braids to ponytails, or just when you pull a section to the side to get it away from your face. These accessories have hit a new peak in creativity with everything from rhinestones to red roses incorporated for added drama, and they are so inexpensive.

Top Knots are another easy spin on gym hair, a fast way to get those locks out of the way but, like the ponytail, top knots are frequently seen on the red carpets and lofty runways of the fashion elite.

•Star by putting your hair in a ponytail up high on your head. Take the hair and begin twisting until it starts to coil around itself. Then use bobby pins to hold it in place around the bun and near the scalp. This couldn't be much easier and it looks great!

A word about 'second-day' hair. It's actually easier to execute an updo after you've gone a couple days (or more) without washing. The hair isn't so soft and silky like it is freshly washed and clean. It has more texture and the leftover product makes it easier to style, giving it more hold and traction.
