With a tip o' the hat to the styles of the '80s, the Academy of Country Music Awards in Texas this weekend took on a distinct rocker flare in hair with men, in particular, standing out with short hair, long hair and everything in between.

Even when styles were similar, there was something going on to make each unique. Some of the guys wore a bit of design on one side and then a tailored prohibition cut on the other ... two haircuts in one!
I am seeing some permed hair starting to make its way back onto the red carpets and concrete runways, another echo from the '80s.

Kelly Clarkson did something with the asymmetrical look, too, wearing a soft curl on one side and shaved on the other to give her a dramatic look.

How to Get the new curls with a perm: To get the new look with curls make sure you consult with your stylist on perms and how tight you want your curl. After you get your perm, usually less is better when styling with gel. Put a little in your hair when it's still damp, then use a blow dryer on cool, low setting while scrunching the hair into the palm of your hand.

How to Get the Prohibition Look: Talk to a great barber who really knows how to carve. Consider staying long on one side or the top, holding soft waves with a little mousse or gel in the hair while wet. Then blow dry and use a big barrel curling iron to create soft waves.

Reba McEntire, who was awarded a Milestone Award, presented by her daughter-in-law, Kelly Clarkson, wore here stunning ginger hair with her bangs swept to the side and soft curls giving her another of those '80s looks.

Martina McBride's wore her hair in long, soft waves and natural brown tones, a beautiful, signature look for her that goes anywhere, including the Academy of Country Music at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, and multiple recent recording covers.

Always going long was host Sofia Vergara in waves of soft, caramel highlights, a signature style for this beautiful star, and another reminder that natural colors and subtle color transitions remain a very strong trend.

Miranda Lambert took home ... "count 'em" ... four awards from the night, including album of the year and female vocalist of the year, leaving her long blonde signature waves at home and going instead with a center part and only a very subtle wave for the red carpet. Notable was her eye-catching dress with deep plunging cleavage and long slit up the right leg ... "Wow!"

As always, be open to change!
