Weekend Recommendations -- September 15-18

Labor Day has come and gone, but fall doesn't officially begin until Friday, September 23rd. So before we welcome in the cool autumn breezes, here's to one last weekend of sizzling summer celebrations.

Thursday, September 15th
Sarah Silverman and Friends at Largo - Increase your smile lines as Sarah brings out only the funniest of friends to grace the famous Largo stage. $25. Doors 7 pm, Showtime 8:30 pm. Buy tickets in advance as it always sells out and arrive early to enjoy a drink from the bustling bar.

Friday, September 16th
Peter Hook and The Light at El Rey - Catch the co-founder of Joy Division and former bass player of New Order perform the album Unknown Pleasures with his new band. Word on the Internet streets is Moby will be joining him on stage. There'll be no lack of joy in this evening. $22. Doors 8 pm.

Saturday, September 17th
Don Henley and Lucinda Williams at The Greek - Get yourself to The Greek to hear the sounds of Eagles member Henley and the unique vocalizations of Williams fill the night air in this beautiful outdoor venue in Griffith Park. $50-$150. 7:30pm.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High Cinespia Film Screening - Aloha, Mr. Hand. Bring a picnic and snuggle with blankets in the second to last weekend of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery screenings. Watching movies in a graveyard is one of LA's favorite things to do, so buy tickets online to avoid a sell-out on the street. $10. Parking - $10. Gate opens at 6:30 pm, screening at 8 pm.

We Barbarians at The Satellite
The Long Beach band We Barbarians has moved to Brooklyn. But I'm still going to claim them as locals and their recently released EP makes me proud. Doors 8:30 pm. $10 advance, $12 at the door.

Friday and Saturday
TreePeople Presents Airplane! Staged Reading - Don't call me Shirley! In the final weekend of summer events at this miniature Hollywood Bowl in Coldwater Canyon, actors bring alive the hilarious film with special guest Robert Forster. Doors open 7 pm to picnic, 8 pm show-time. General Admission - $15; TreePeople members/seniors - $10.

Surfer Blood
Blood and surf might not be your idea of a good combination, but this indie rock band from Florida knows how to concoct some tantalizing tunes. You can catch them Friday night at The Echoplex with, among others, LA band Hands opening. 8:30 pm. $16 at the door. On Saturday, they play for free in the outside courtyard of the Getty Museum. 6 pm.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Fireworks Finale - An Evening in Paris at the Hollywood Bowl - Be an American imagining yourself in Paris as you listen to French tunes and watch the Bowl's never-disappointing fireworks display lights the sky. You might just buy yourself a last-minute flight to Paris. 8:30 pm Friday/Saturday, 7:30 pm Sunday.

Lobster Festival in San Pedro
Pirates, lobster meals at "recession busting prices" and a music lineup that makes me want to run to the port each day. Friday 5 pm-11 pm, Saturday 11 am-11 pm and Sunday 11 am-7 pm. $10 entry, cash only at the box office. Check the website for full details.
