The Lynchings of Empty Chairs

Posted: 09/20/2012 2:20 pm

Depraved haters in Texas and Virgina are lynching empty chairs -- Clint Eastwood's symbolic President Obama. In Texas, the story was broken by BurntOrangeReport. In Virginia, it was BlueVirginia. The question is, are these hateful protests from isolated crackpots? Or do they exemplify a larger fringe America so lost in bigotry and anti-Obama zealotry that they've lost all moral bearings?

Another even more important question: Are they being encouraged by more well-known right-wing commentators?

It must be noted that a popular movement involving the display of empty chairs was initiated by right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin. In pitching the empty-chair protest earlier in September, Malkin wrote, "Decorate yours anyway you want it." Certainly, Malkin couldn't have meant the symbolic lynching of the president, right?

What could be uglier or more disturbing than the use of symbolic lynching as a political protest? The sad history of the lynching of African-Americans in earlier chapters of American history remains a stain hard to remove. That there are Americans still quite happy to participate in even symbolic lynchings says something about the state of race relations in America that is too often overlooked.

The reaction to these horrible incidents will probably be something like, "They are just a few psychologically damaged fools who have no relationship to the feelings or behavior of most Americans." That is true, as far as it goes. But we can't ignore the fact that some, at least, believe there's still a place in our culture for public displays of violent racism.

So, let's see if any Republican officials, from the Mitt Romney campaign to GOP governors, Senators, and U.S. Representatives, step up to denounce these sickening incidents. They will want to ignore it out of fear of alienating a certain portion of their base, of course. Very likely they don't share the feelings, but they won't turn down the votes.

And, Michelle Malkin, will you make it clear that by "decorate yours anyway you want it," you did not intend to encourage the lynchings of empty chairs? Your empty chair day did result in an photo-shopped empty chair hanging from a helicopter, a smashed chair in a fire pit, an empty chair with a gas can. You owe the nation a clarification of your intentions.

Well whatever the reason behind those chairs---Americans aren't going back to that. So to those silly people who have dreams about Dixie--I have news, it's just that a dream. The world is bigger, and so are people's issues.

People do not stick together in that way anymore. Welcome to the remix.

Many have short memories of Bush being hung in effigy. Do a Google search and it's still popular and even on Youtube. The many who did it was due to there feelings he is/was a bad president. Guess what with a almost 50/50 split many feel the same about Obama. So why can't this be about bad presidents and not race. We come a lone way and will see future minorities in this position and criticism shouldn't be taken as racism.
03:33 PM on 09/27/2012
Well, I don't have that short of a memory. Hung in effigy -- Johnson, Nixon, and the history of all that goes back a long way.

So why can't this be about a "bad president"? Context .....

Does anyone find it sad that Malkin, herself a member of a minority group in America, is not so subtle in suggesting an effigy - no matter how abstract - of the president (also a minority) be lynched? Does Malkin imagine a past where she would get some free pass from a lynch-mob if she were accused and convicted of a crime? Or even a victim of hatred?

I didn't notice Eastwood using windchimes to depict Obama, he used an empty chair. Who did he talk to in the empty chair and even answered him back? Your spin is a fail.

The republicans who hang their chair are obviously referring to hanging the president...it is wrong no matter what skin color...but since our president IS a black man, then at this point, it becomes rascist...no denying that! So if a neighbor has done this "act"...be aware of what type of neighbor you REALLY have!

I agree 100%

Those very disturbing actions that do deserve more attention from the media and must be publicly condemned! This is sybolic hanging as a way of channeling hate and racism. The shameful history of lynchings and hangings is not so far away that those aberrations can be tolerated!
06:20 PM on 09/22/2012
This is beyond sad, disgusting, vile etc.........I wanted to comment, but after reading the article and all comments I have to go throw up.

I would like to thank all Obama supporters who have hung chairs from their trees.

Yes I do realize it is not your intent to support Obama. But by putting your hate and craziness on display for all to see, you have reminded many independents and moderates of the ugliness that has infected the conservative movement and made it much more likely they'll vote progressive.

So thanks and enjoy the next four years.

That's a nice reminder! As things get uglier the undecided may finally come to their senses.

I feel lucky my Republican neighbor only put up a Romney sign. I responded with two Obama signs. Now he put up a really big Romney sign on the corner into our neighborhood. Now I am working up the courage to go to the other corner and ask if I can put up a large Obama sign (not sure if they are repub or dem) My long winded point is...there are many other ways to show your disapproval or opinion. Hanging a chair is a hate filled statement. Bush effigies did not line streets, there was not one in every yard and it did make the news when there was one..and I didn't like that either.

As much as I do not care for the very vocal repub in my neighborhood, who went around and asked what political party every house was last year and now he only glares at me... I have a respect for him that he doesn't hang his chairs from his tree.

I also fanned you. I don't support Obama and in fact am VERY vocal against him, BUT, I love the way you think.

Also, don't get me wrong, I haven't hung a chair from my tree but I don't feel there is anything wrong with people hanging chairs from a tree. It's only a chair after all. I saw one full of bullet holes and that made me laugh until I cried. THAT dude REALLY must've hated that chair. LOL
07:13 PM on 09/25/2012
Thanks..I followed you back. My best friends and much of my family are "not supporting Obama". I wonder how his wife felt when she came home and found he shot up her chair!

Michelle Malkin. Nikki Haley, Bobby Jindal, Dinesh D'Souza and many others who parents were allowed to immigrate into American because of the 1965 Immigration Act, which was born because of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill. There families immigrated here during legalized Jim Crow but many of the practices remained in tact. They now thank American Blacks by demonstrating a deep hatred for us, I guess their logic is if they can hate Black folks more than White folks do, then they be accepted by them more so. Nothing was more shocking than hearing Governor Nikki Haley stand up at the GOP convention and Proudly say she's stopping Black folks from voting, she sounded like one of the racist of the past in America. I believe we must remind those folks, if not for American Blacks they would not be in America today. American White citizens DID NOT WANT THEM HERE.
Mary Zorski
Nothing to see here folks, move along.

I am white, and I apologize on behalf of the nasty and contemptible behavior of some of my Caucasian peers. I want you here. Our country would be terribly diminished without the many, many contributions of the Black culture. It would in no way have the wondrous diversity it has today.

You don't have to apologize for anyone, we are accountable for our own actions individually. I am well aware of the courageous White American citizens to lost family, friends and some even their lives fighting to do the right that is the case today. My statement was not an indictment or meant to be about any group. I agree our nation is a better place for our diversities.

YOu should ponder the reasons for the lull in ever present depravity, in 2008. Maybe they were scared of GWB thus allowing BHO to win.

When will we get past this foolishness? Some people are racists ,big deal!! As long as their actions are not criminal so what!! Limbaugh and the rest have a right to their opinions!!The same time we are condemning chair lynchings how many of our black children have been killed by our own kind?Racism will never be completely erased ok!!! We have it far better off now then during the time of Dr King!! yet we as a people are killing EACH OTHER AT AN ALARMING RATE!! WE NEED TO STOP KILLING EACH OTHER!!! Or do we have to wait for the white man to tell us when to stop!! It seems every on these boards get so upset about trivial nonsense, meanwhile the more important task of fixing our own communities falls to the wayside!!Please lets start with fixing our own communities from the ground up,then once we get a handle on our own problems as a race limbaugh and them wont matter!

Try seaching Google Images for "bush hanged effigy" (don't use the quotes).

Evidently it's OK for Liberal gays in Hollywood to lynch likeness of Sarah Palin because they're Democrat voters.

It's always humorous when a liberal does something dumb, but anyone else doing the same is a racist and a hate monger.

i recall the incident of which you post. i also recall that it was not ok. there was a lot of outrage because it and the people who put the likeness up as part of their halloween decorations were forced to take it down.

people do crazy $h1+. when we call them on it, it forces change. so no it's not ok to lynch empty chairs or the likeness of SP.

Its all hateful but there is a difference when you make it about someones color, but its a free country put your racism on display. Just don't cry when your shunned cause you can't play nice.
