The new numbers are out from Nielsen Online and now there can be no doubt: The Huffington Post is currently the fastest growing major news site in the U.S.

Over at E&P we just posted the exclusive stats for May from Nielsen (our sister brand), and they show that not only has HuffPost cracked the Top 30 sites at #27 (Drudge is at #39), it has gained more than any other site in the past year.

HuffPost earned 4.7 million unique visitors for May 2008, up from 1.4 million last May -- a better than 300% gain. It edged out The Associated Press, at 4.5 million, and Fox Television.

The Top 10 featured true giants (in order): Yahoo! News, MSNBC Digital Network, CNN Digital Network, AOL News, NYTimes.com (which went from 12.8 million to 21.3 million), Tribune Newspapers, Gannett Newspapers, Google News, ABCNEWS Digital Network, and USATODAY.com. The Washington Post site came in at #13.

Here's the link to E&P and full stats.
