Looking back at all of the sad, tragic and unnecessary deaths in Iraq that I have written about in the past five years, it is hard to identify one that stands out. But one death does still haunt me, above all others.

Alyssa Peterson was one of the first female soldiers killed in Iraq -- and she died by her own hand after objecting to interrogation methods used on prisoners. A cover-up, naturally, followed.

Peterson, 27, a Flagstaff, Ariz., native, servied with C Company, 311th Military Intelligence BN, 101st Airborne. Peterson was an Arabic-speaking interrogator assigned to the prison at our air base in troubled Tal Afar in northwestern Iraq. According to official records, she died on Sept. 15, 2003, from a "non-hostile weapons discharge."

She was only the third American woman killed in Iraq, so her death drew wide press attention. A "non-hostile weapons discharge" leading to death is not unusual in Iraq, often quite accidental, so this one apparently raised few eyebrows. The Arizona Republic, three days after her death, reported that Army officials "said that a number of possible scenarios are being considered, including Peterson's own weapon discharging, the weapon of another soldier discharging, or the accidental shooting of Peterson by an Iraqi civilian." And that might have ended it right there.

But in this case, a longtime radio and newspaper reporter named Kevin Elston, not satisfied with the public story, decided to probe deeper in 2005, "just on a hunch," he told me in late 2006 (there's a chapter about it in my new book). He made "hundreds of phone calls" to the military and couldn't get anywhere, so he filed a Freedom of Information Act [FOIA] request. When the documents of the official investigation of her death arrived, they contained bombshell revelations. Here's what the Flagstaff public radio station, KNAU, where Elston now works, reported:

"Peterson objected to the interrogation techniques used on prisoners. She refused to participate after only two nights working in the unit known as the cage. Army spokespersons for her unit have refused to describe the interrogation techniques Alyssa objected to. They say all records of those techniques have now been destroyed."

She was then assigned to the base gate, where she monitored Iraqi guards, and sent to suicide prevention training. "But on the night of September 15th, 2003, Army investigators concluded she shot and killed herself with her service rifle," the documents disclose.

The Army talked to some of Peterson's colleagues. Asked to summarize their comments, Elston told me: "The reactions to the suicide were that she was having a difficult time separating her personal feelings from her professional duties. That was the consistent point in the testimonies, that she objected to the interrogation techniques, without describing what those techniques were."

Elston said that the documents also refer to a suicide note found on her body, which suggested that she found it ironic that suicide prevention training had taught her how to commit suicide. He filed another FOIA request for a copy of the actual note.

Peterson, a devout Mormon, had graduated from Flagstaff High School and earned a psychology degree from Northern Arizona University on a military scholarship. She was trained in interrogation techniques at Fort Huachuca in Arizona, and was sent to the Middle East in 2003.

A search of "fallen heroes" message boards often turns up revealing, or chilling, details about deceased soldiers. At one tribute site on the Web, Mary W. Black of Flagstaff wrote, "The very day Alyssa died, her Father was talking to me at the Post Office where we both work, in Flagstaff, Ariz., telling me he had a premonition and was very worried about his daughter who was in the military on the other side of the world. The next day he was notified while on the job by two Army officers."

An A.W. from Los Angeles wrote: "I met Alyssa only once during a weekend surfing trip while she was at DLI. Although our encounter was brief, she made a lasting impression. We did not know each other well, but I was blown away by her genuine, sincere, sweet nature. . . . I was devastated to hear of her death. I couldn't understand why it had to happen to such a wonderful person."

Finally, Daryl K. Tabor of Ashland City, Tenn., who had met her as a journalist in Iraq for the Kentucky New Era paper: "Since learning of her death, I cannot get the image of the last time I saw her out of my mind. We were walking out of the tent in Kuwait to be briefed on our flights into Iraq as I stepped aside to let her out first. Her smile was brighter than the hot desert sun."

A report in The Arizona Daily Sun of Flagstaff -- three years after Alyssa's death -- revealed that Spc. Peterson's mother, Bobbi Peterson, reached at her home in northern Arizona, said that neither she nor her husband Richard had received any official documents that contained information outlined in Elston's report.

In other words: Like the press and the public, even the parents had been kept in the dark.

NOTE: Greg Mitchell's new book is titled, So Wrong for So Long: How the Press, the Pundits -- and the President -- Failed on Iraq (Union Square Press), and features a preface by Bruce Springsteen and a foreword by Joe Galloway. It has been hailed by our own Arianna, Bill Moyers, Glenn Greenwald, Paul Rieckhoff and others.

I see very little in this story that supports suicide. Suicide can only be confirmed when homicide can be ruled out. We have been treated to one made up story after another about the fates of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pat Tillman, Jessica Lynch and others have been maligned and lied about with abandon. Why then do we believe that this woman killed herself? I don't buy it and neither should readers of this column. In an environment so steeped in lying as this one is any story emanating from official sources needs to be suspect. A more likely scenario would be a homicide to cover up a crime. Rape is very common in the military and death by gunshot would be a likely scenario for a perpetrator attempting to cover up his crime. People with ethical objections to the war crimes they see happening around them are also ripe targets of official and semi-official assassination in order to protect the propaganda image of saintly warfare.

I have posted this story on Digg... hruhs is rilght; without an investigation this cannot be left as a suicide. Having been the target of character assassination by prison officials, for my vocal opposition to prison expansion over three years, I can see that there were a number of motives to silence someone who spoke arabic, and acted on faith and good conscience.

As moderator of a discussion on High Crimes and Misdemeanors, on sites such as Change.org, we will probably repost this story on that site, and seek the legal advice of investigators for the family of SPC Peterson; our initial response is to send those family members to the grand jury where they live...we need the grand jury investigations at all levels, to USE the Constitution to End the Abuses of Power by those who believe that they are immune from indictments and impeachments. God help the families of ALL the soldiers who can no longer believe anything that is reported about the deaths or injuries of their loved ones. In the words of Captain Moroni to the Chief Judge Pahoran: I seek not for power, but to tear it down...

Torture General Tied to Indicted Congressman

The Human Resource Exploitation Training Manual was written at Fort Huachuca. A number of the officers and soldiers responsible for human rights abuses at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison have worked at or were trained at the Headquarters for Army Intelligence Training at Ft. Huachuca.

Major General Barbara Fast will be turning over the command of the Intelligence Center and the fort on June 29th. Fast is transferring Ft. Monroe, VA become the deputy for the Army Capabilities Integration Center at the Training and Doctrine Command (One Force implementation).

Congressman Rick Renzi, targeted by FBI agents and dogged by political enemies, will leave public office as he entered - somewhat of a mystery.

The 49-year-old Republican, businessman and father of 12 announced Thursday that he will not seek a fourth term as representative of Arizona's sprawling 1st Congressional District.

The seeds of Renzi's demise were planted in his campaign for the 2002 election, when he used creative financing to build a war chest. Much of that money came from a business associate named James Sandlin and from ManTech Corp., a Fort Huachuca company in which Renzi's father serves as an executive.

Four years later, the FBI, federal prosecutors and congressional investigators began poring over Renzi's legislative and business record. One focus of the inquiry: Renzi's orchestration of an Arizona land swap to benefit Sandlin. A probe focused on Renzi's sponsorship of bills benefiting ManTech Corp. The FBI raided Renzi's family business in Sonoita, seeking evidence.

For a national political figure who served on the powerful House Intelligence Committee, Renzi's background is, as described by Wikipedia, "unclear."

He was born June 11, 1959, in Fort Monmouth, N.J. His family moved to Sierra Vista in 1975, and he completed high school there before getting a degree in criminal justice at Northern Arizona University in 1980.

Exactly what Renzi did for the next two decades is blurry. He has said he worked overseas for the Defense Department, but research turned up no information on which agency, where he was assigned or what duties he had.

Renzi founded an insurance company in 1989 and bought a six-bedroom home in Virginia two years later for $765,000. He and his wife, Roberta, lived there with their children for more than a decade.

In the late 1990s, Renzi opened an insurance agency in Sonoita and registered to vote in Santa Cruz County in 1999. A year later, he bought a vineyard in the area.

During fall 2001, a new congressional district was formed in Arizona, and Renzi bought a house in Flagstaff. He established himself as a voter there and, a month later, announced his candidacy. In interviews at the time, Renzi shrugged off the label of outsider, saying, "Let the chips fall where they may if I am a carpetbagger."

Renzi's 2002 platform was, for the most part, conservative Republican. His campaign was bolstered by fundraisers featuring President Bush, Vice President Cheney and others. But his financial advantage over Democrat George Cordova stemmed largely from cash infusions that later were ruled "impermissible" by the Federal Election Commission.

Investigators found that Renzi improperly shifted $369,090 in corporate loans to his campaign. Most of that money originated from business partner Sandlin, who bought into Renzi's real-estate company amid the campaign.

Always distant, or reclusive, Renzi declined to let reporters chronicle his first days in office - a rite of passage for most new lawmakers, who welcome the publicity. He entered Congress a millionaire, according to Associated Press reports. Yet, a year later, a bank foreclosed on his Flagstaff house.

Among Renzi's first acts as a congressman was sponsorship of legislation to erase Fort Huachuca's obligation to preserve the San Pedro, a river that is not in his district. Environmental groups cried foul, but the law passed.

The legislation also raised eyebrows: Renzi's father, Army Gen. Eugene Renzi, had been commandant at Fort Huachuca before he became an executive with ManTech, a contractor at the base. ManTech had $450 million in contracts at the fort, with an option for $1.1 billion more. Its employees poured more money into Renzi's 2002 campaign than any other business, federal records show.

Thank you for this revelation Greg. The Bush Admn. has gone to great lengths to hide the truth from the American people. We were not allowed to see the coffin's of the dead returning. We were not allowed to know how wretchedly the Bush Admn. treated our returning wounded. We were not allowed to see how our prisoners were treated. We denied the poor wretches languishing in GITMO for 5 years any semblance of justice.

Bush and his ilk have driven our National Honor into the gutter of lies and deceit in pursuit of their truly despicable agenda....FOR WHAT!? We have gained NOTHING! Bush has learned NOTHING in his 7 years as "leader" from the suffering of our citizens....except of course his greedy rich/corporate clients.

Hear hear!

It would be lovely to see her name remembered with something like a human rights award.

~~

And it's stories like this that remind us all how greatly the Bush Administration betrayed US soldiers as well as US ideals when they set in motion the orders which lead to Abu Ghraib and Bagram.

I second your opinion. She should not be forgotten.

wow, this is my first time hearing this story. the fu*king MSM will not touch something like this with a ten foot pole. such a shame that a hero is forgotten and we had to fawn over Jessica Lynch for months. not a single word about a true hero who'd rather die than do these horrible things. i'm so sad she had to take her own life cos she felt she had no recourse.
