John McCain's Dick Move

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

I don't know if the John McCain we've been seeing lately is the real McCain or "Candidate McCain," but either way, John McCain is turning out to be a real jerk. For the candidate whose earlier promise to run a "respectful campaign" has already become a running joke, John McCain has spent the last few weeks being inexcusably disrespectful towards his opponent.

There was a time when candidates wouldn't run negative ads during the Olympics out of respect for the Olympic spirit of unity. John McCain eschewed that trend and spent $5 million in ad time during the games to bash Obama.

There was a time when candidates would welcome their opponents to the campaign and looking forward to a spirited debate. When John Kerry announced his VP in 2004, the Bush campaign said "I welcome Senator Edwards on the ticket ... I look forward to a good spirited debate." When Barack Obama announced his VP, McCain first response was to attack, saying "There has been no harsher critic of Barack Obama's lack of experience than Joe Biden."

There was a time when presidential candidates held their fire during their opponent's conventions, knowing that their respect for their opponent would be matched in kind during their convention. John McCain broke that tradition, opting to run negative ads during the Democratic convention, lest a day go by in which his pledge to run a positive campaign isn't once again shown to be a lie.

On the eve of Obama's historic speech, John McCain's campaign is hinting that they may interrupt the acceptance speech to announce their pick for VP. (When I grew up, I was told that it was rude to interrupt people while they're talking.)

And finally, in an attempt to distract people from the ugly, dishonest turn his campaign has taken, John McCain is buying his way into Obama's spotlight with a single positive ad.

Don't let this ad fool you into thinking that John McCain actually respects Barack Obama. I know politics ain't a beanbag, but John McCain has run a truly disrespectful campaign. Every chance he's had to take the high ground and wage a campaign based on mutual respect and a desire to move America forward, he's turned in the opposite direction. This is a nasty, brutish election and it's all because John McCain made the choice that he would rather win an election than possibly lose and escape with his dignity intact. It's no wonder he's unable to define "honor", he no longer has any.

I don't know if the John McCain we've been seeing lately is the real McCain or "Candidate McCain," but either way, John McCain is turning out to be a real jerk. For the candidate whose earlier promise...

Anyone that claims Biden has to pull punches on Palin lest he be called a sexist doesn't understand the feminist movement at all. As a feminist, I can tell you that Biden should treat Palin exactly the same way as he would treat Romney or Pawlenty or any other man; that is, he should eviscorate her! Biden knows this And the good news is that Biden's proven and LONG history of supporting Women's Issues should shield him from any morons claiming "sexism". He is more of a feminist that Palin could EVER be!

I say enough of "dissected presidents" (i.e. Rove being "bush's brain") Mc Cain graduated 4th from the bottom of his class. I'm going to vote with someone who hasn't a removed intellect for a change-for THE change.

I'm sure you are aware of Obama's first response to McCain's choice for VP. Let's quit the whining and get with the program. Obama has plenty of ammo he can use on McCain and Biden can make minced meat out of the governor from Alaska.

Disturbing and hilarious at the same time. This really does look like nobody else wanted the job, alright. Since Palin wasn't a previous candidate, at least McCain doesn't have to worry about there being any videos of them beating each other up during the primaries; he had to pick someone - at least he's safe on that front. Also reminds me of Bush picking Meiers for the Supreme Court position; he knew she'd never get confirmed, it was just smoke so that he could replace her with the guy he really wanted.
Hmmm...if Palin gets thumped in the debates (a safe bet if there ever was one), will McCain kick her to the curb and look for a replacement?

What I will never understand is how people can support more of what has gone on these last 8 years. Do they honestly think their lives are better? Impossible, unless they are in Fortune 500. How is it that some people can still believe that going into Iraq was a honest decision? The mockery this administration is made of our Country, our Constitution, our true Values, by their lies, torture, spying, flaunting the Law, on & on is incredible. And Rice at the beginning saying she didn't look at the reports from Clinton's people about terrorists because she had to "organize" her office, dear God. And the lot of them up there lying through their teeth about WMD and none of these people will face an accounting? How can that be? I pray our younger Americans will see the truth and make Obama our next President. It is unthinkable about what will happen to this Country if he is not the next president. McCain is pretty much out of control with regard to his geographical mistakes, his floundering over questions not rehearsed & getting the questions beforehand in that infamous town hall debate. Reminescent of the debate G.W. had with that rectangle box on his back under his jacket like a windup toy, which one assumes was attached to a speaker feeding him answers and none of it followed up on, then or now. Moderate Republicans have lost their party and I would think they would be ashamed and horrified.

I can only chalk it up to some kind of mind control through the media something like in the movie "Batman Forever" with Jim Carrey as The Riddler. 'Sound outrageous? Not nearly as outrageous as the spin I've seen surrounding the McCain campaign, but worse, the attempt to deal with them as a rational force. Its becoming a national irresponsibility with the sanctity of our country at stake and most of the power brokers complicit in its demise.

(DO TUNE IN CSPAN for coverage of McC's annopuncement of running mate...they occassionally have panned the room..Those that have shown up have been cramped into a close ranged spae to make "appear" as if cramped due to perhaps large crown turnout but NOT as the place is quite empty in the immediate surroundings..Perhaps the present delay is cuz they out on campus to see if they can recruit more "spectators" to wave those flags Dem style !!!!
Palin has some other issues, just heard one say on MSNBC say she will likely get a pass for using her GOVT. OFFICE to harrass a brother in law who was in family dispute as women will be sympathetic to her standing up for sister against abusive husband charges....Uh, not good enough reason and just further reminds how Cheney has abused HIS VP status !!!

The choice of Gov Palin is clearly intended to help McCain poach Hillary's disgruntled supporters... I don't know how well her strong anti-abortion views will go over, but making blatantly sexist comments like this one makes McCain's job that much easier, in addition to being quite lame.

As a moderate (technically a Republican) I used to be a huge John McCain fan. But then to get nominated John fell in love with the Neocons and their front men Bush, Cheney and Rove and the big mouths of the media rightwing.

Now let me say that Neocons are not traditional Republicans bent on fiscal responsibility and a realistic foreign policy. They have in fact trashed this nation and made us look ridiculous in the eyes of the rest of the world.

Indeed, it’s sad, but even as far left as Obama my seem to many traditional Republicans and independents, he is still far closer to the values of moderate Americans than those outlaw bandits that have been running this nation into the ground for the last 7 plus years. Whether you are a traditional Republican or an independent, John McCain fronting for the Neocons is just plain dangerous. Obama must be the man!

Thank you.

I'm glad to see so many republicans showing their support for Obama.

It's not about Obama or McCain, it's about our country. The biggest opponents of Bush's form of governance are the true conservatives. They are the ones who have spoken most eloquently about impeaching Bush.

Bush has done great harm to this country. He's done even greater harm to the republican party.

What Bush represents and now what McCain represents is a small bunch of neocons who have gained the national stage through voter fraud, an illegal war, the politization of our government, and lies.

I don't disagree with true conservative values, but what Bush and McBush offer aren't values of any type. They offer fascism and a country reduced to 3rd world status because it's been robbed into bankruptacy to fill the coffers of the already rich and powerful.

My question is, how can the Bushes and the McBushes stand to live in a country where the uberwealthy control all and the rest of us are just their minions subject to their whimsey? Who would really want that life except the mentally ill meglomaniacs? Oh, yeah, Hitler thought it was great. But sane people want a country like the one our forefathers created and like the one our brave soldiers have fought for. Who wants to give our country further over to the neocons?

Bullshit. Bush is the apotheosis of conservatism, and furthermore, the conservatives have aided and abetted his anti-constitutional warmongering at each and every opportunity. Conservatism is dead because Bush put it into practice, not because he ignored it. The time for Conservatives to have spoken up and distanced themselves from the Bush insanity was at the beginning, not after it was obvious that Bush tried hard to make himself the first American dictator. They did speak up, but it was to call Bush's opponents terrorist sympathizers, cowards, fools and traitors, not to criticize Bush.

RIP conservatism. Nobody will miss you.

Excellent points! However, you might want to read "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. It presents another picture of the so-called equality and freedom that our founding fathers wanted. It is an insightful explanation of why our country is the way it is. It appears that what the neo-cons are doing had its roots in the American Revolution with the wealthy founding fathers.

As Obi-Wan says "Many of the great truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."

Face it dude... they OWN your party. They aren't going to give up on power that easily, so your concept of a "traditional Republican" is D-E-A-D. The current GOP is not the party of smaller government, or less govenrmental interfearance in your life. Or fiscal responsibility. In fact, it's the Democratic party that can lay claim to those aspects. Compare Clinton Admin to GWB. The difference is startling. I seriously think that if more people would stop listening to Faux Nooze, and other people with a vested interest in the Neocon agenda, they might be as surprised as you.

Obama is not "far left" at all. He is a cautious, deliberate, moderate Democrat, as we will soon all know once he's in the Oval Office. People look at his brown skin and project radical attributes that he does not possess.
