Itawamba Agricultural High School is ruining prom for senior Constance McMillen and her classmates.

"Due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events, the Itawamba County School District has decided to not host a prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School this year," school board members released in a public statement.

The "distractions?" Eighteen-year-old Constance McMillen wanted to bring her girlfriend as her date to the April 2nd prom. And she wanted to wear a tuxedo.

On behalf of McMillian, who is a lesbian, the Mississippi chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal suit asking the court to force the school board to reinstate the prom. The suit alleges that district officials have violated McMillen's First Amendment rights.

Mississippi ACLU legal director Kristy Bennett said school officials are trying to make a villain out of McMillen.

"She's fighting for everyone to be able to enjoy the prom," Bennett said in a statement released this morning. "The government, and that includes public schools, can't censor someone's free expression just because some other person might not like it."

The story even caught attention of Ellen Degeneres:

An in interview with the Associated Press, McMillen said she felt some hostility toward her on the Itawamba County Agricultural High School campus. "Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year.'"
