Jorge Ramos is the top news anchor at Univision and one of the most recognizable faces of the Latino community. On August 25, at a Donald Trump press conference in Dubuque, Iowa he was physically removed after asking tough questions on immigration to the presidential hopeful. Trump ordered him out after exclaiming "Go back to Univision".
Once outside the conference room, one of Trump's supporters told Ramos: "It's not about you. Get out of my country! Get out! It's not about you." Those words translated Trump's true meaning. He has unleashed a campaign of hatred against the Latino community starting with his infamous inaugural speech in which he depicted Mexicans as "rapists" and "criminals". He has also taken shots at women, the African American community and low-wage workers.

At first, Trump was taken as a joke. And he is a joke- a bad one. However, he is leading the GOP presidential candidates. It seems that whenever Donald Trump creates controversy by insulting people because of their ethnicity, race, class or gender, he surges in the polls. By mid-August he had 32 percent of registered voters' support and 62% of registered Republicans.

He clearly leads the GOP pack. But what does that mean? Will he win the presidency if nominated as the GOP presidential candidate? Not a chance. His rise to the top has been built in alienating entire groups not in creating a broad coalition. Though this strategy is working for him at the moment at the end of the day he will lose badly.
Even before insulting Ramos on the night of the 25, a Gallup Poll had shown Trump at the bottom of the GOP presidential hopefuls' likeability among Latinos. With -51 percent likeability, Trump secured an indisputable last place among GOP candidates. Rick Perry and Ted Cruz followed him with -7 likeability. Trump claims he does things big and among Latinos, he is losing big time.

It is widely accepted that a GOP candidate may need 40 percent of the Latino vote to win the presidency. I dare to predict that Trump won't get 20 percent of the Latino vote. How is Trump going to make up the difference? Is he going to attract African Americans? I wouldn't put my money on it. Is he going to attract more women than Romney? Romney's binders full of women sound progressive compared to Trump's diatribes against women.
It seems that Trump has decided to ignore every analysis of the past presidential election showing the GOP losing among young voters, African Americans, Latinos and Women. Or maybe he thinks he can force his way into their "hearts". After all he has vowed to win the Latino vote.

It may be that Trump has been trolling everybody and knows very well that he will not be the GOP candidate much less win the presidency. Who knows, maybe it started as a publicity stunt and the early victories convinced him he can actually do it. Either way he is not to be the president. That does not mean that the way he is conducting his campaign is not dangerous. Ramos is right in calling him "the loudest voice of intolerance, hatred and division in the United States".

It is not just Latinos, African Americans, women and younger voters who are going to keep Trump from winning the presidency. A majority of Whites will not vote for him. Trump's campaign has revitalized the intolerant and the hateful. It has allowed for racists, misogynists and homophobes to be so openly and proudly. But that is not where this country is moving. Trump is playing all the wrong cards and has not realized that his Palin moment is over.
It may seem like a wave of intolerance, hatred and ignorance is enveloping this country but make no mistake that wave is ridden by an ever shrinking minority. Let Trump have his movement and the intolerant and the hateful to come out. It is good that they are in they are in the open. They will lose badly once again as a broad coalition moves this country forward.
