Today's Washington Post catches up with a three-week-old Times-Picayune story about possible problems with the Corps' rebuilding of a levee on the east side of New Orleans, and goes much further, depicting a rebuilding process as pocked with vulnerabilities as, perhaps, the levee system itself. The sidebar deserves a place in the "nobody ever imagined" hall of fame. Somebody, some day, is going to do a good, long, multi-part investigative piece about the Army Corps, the way it works, the way it doesn't work, its effect on everything from New Orleans to Los Angeles to the salmon fisheries in the northwest. The fantasy assignment desk can't wait.
