The AP, in a story on a joint appearance by President Bush and his mother to promote his Social Security program (yes, not dead yet) says this:

And like a vaudeville team, they kept stepping on each other's lines and zinging each other.

A vaudeville team like that probably wouldn't have worked very much. It's like saying, "like a rock band, they kept playing out of time." Did the time-hassled writer mean to say "they kept keying off each other's lines"? And yes, commenter James, that's another question I know the answer to.
