Stitution--Pro or Con?

BBC Radio 4'sreported Thursday on growing doubts among some observers that the Iraqi constitution can, or should, be written according to the agreed-on schedule. And what then? If stable old Europe can fracture while trying to ratify a constitution, what's going to happen in, to use a cable news cliche, The New Iraq?

We all learned the phrase "connect the dots" after 9/11. Recent reports indicate we didn't learn the behavior behind the phrase, as last week Richard Thonrburgh and other dignitaries denounced the poor state of intelligence-sharing at the government level.

But journalism seems pretty poor at dot-connecting, too. How about two stories unfolding simultaneously--the French and Dutch rejection of the new EU constitution, and the sloowwww beginning of the process of drawing up the Iraqi constitution (the only defined duty of the provisional government elected way back on Jan. 30)?

I understand that, as a matter of policy, our government has been choosing not to look too far ahead on this whole Iraq thing, but these would seem to be dots that somebody in the American media might want to connect, just for a choice spot in the "I told you so" lottery next spring.
