Back in October, this department passed along allegations from email informants suggesting that, while the Red Cross's Katrina help-line was always busy, the phone line for accepting donations was always answered promptly. At the time, I told anybody who asked to direct their charitable contributions to smaller, more grass-roots outfits like MusiCares or the Brennans' charity for hospitality-industry workers. Today, the Washington Post follows Saturday's NYT front-pager on two Red Cross volunteers being removed from their New Orleans jobs with what may be the big hammer: an investigation of the Red Cross (and the Humane Society) by the La. Attorney General.
