I am there right now and there are some serious mountains as well - did some hiking yesterday and am paying the price today. The west side is heavily populated but the east side is rather mountainous with beautiful national parks.

I was told that there are pre-Chinese tribes in the mountains. I knew a few Taiwanese, one was a scrupulously clean ( borderline crazy) lady doing a Ph.D the other a Buddhist Abbot.

I grew up in Taiwan for 10 years when I was little...can't wait to go back sometime and experience this beautiful little island with an adult perspective.

It is definitely a fascinating place - I think you'll have a great time when you return. I am putting up some pictures that I took last week so you can see some of the sites from the east side of the island.
