Does government have the right to limit the pay of executives when taxpayers hold a majority interest in the company? The public option for health care is sneaking its way back onto the table in the health care reform game. The Obama administration has taken a hardcore stance regarding Fox News. And Len Downie of the Washington Post proposes public funding for journalism.
Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup
This week, Obama's pay czar announced he'd be slashing executive pay at seven of the biggest recipients of bailout billions. So it's no surprise that many of Wall Street's Masters of the Universe didn't turn up at the New York fundraiser President Obama spoke at -- choosing instead to attend a party thrown to toast the release of Too Big To Fail, Andrew Ross Sorkin's blow-by-blow account of the meltdown. There, enjoying cocktails and finger food, were many of the central players, including Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan and John Mack of Morgan Stanley. Which is kind of like Hannibal Lecter showing up for the opening of Silence of the Lambs. Perhaps they take comfort in Sorkin's assessment that when it comes to reforming Wall Street "the Obama administration seems to have moved on to other priorities." I need a drink.

We need to stay the course in becoming a progressive nation.
It has been said again and again that the right (especially on this website) that the right is comprised of the ignorant and we need to manage them.
The more companies the government controls, the better we'll be able to provide a green economy and promulgate the correct teachings to the people.
I see the events of the past year as a natural progression to socialism, a way of living that I embrace.
With global warming, gay rights, exploding population, petroleum based economies, etc., we need to manage ourselves from a central authority.
You planning to tell the electorate all this after it's happened, or do they have a right to know what's up beforehand?
When taxpayers hold majority control, the executives should be receiving civil service pay...NO bonuses., just do your job and go home (of course they should also be eligible for loss of employment unlike the civil service). In fact many of these same executives are responsible for the disaster the country is living now....why aren't they in jail ?
Why don*t we pay our public officials more so they are less tempted by the corporate money . It makes sense to pay better salaries to attract a better pool of talent.
That is a brilliant idea. Although they have to get elected first before it would even matter. Election campaigns are another way that candidates are tempted by corporate money. So think of something for that too, then you will have the solution.
that's friggin brilliant!! and let's pay everyone more, because we all know that the only thing that drives humans is money--
oh wait, we've tried that for the last 30 years, and it turns out, the pay is never enough.
How about doing things out of integrity, out of a sense of ownership and participation, and pride?
That is democracy in its finest. If the public holds majority share in a company, their voice should be heard as well, if the companies do not like it that way, they can buy the public out of the company.
He who pays the piper dictates the tunes.
