What kind of interview would it have been, if it were only a progressive love-fest? Jon was playing devil's advocate, and Arianna didn't get tripped up once. Great interview!
I think they're direct competitors really, and both giants in their fields. They both seem to admire each other, like to tease, and probably actually think the kind of blogging that 50,000 people a day begin is a total waste of time; but the prospect of learning how to be someone who is READ (is anyone reading this?) will sell books.
Writers are all selfish boors. In fact, all human beings are selfish boors.
But selfish boors make the world go round, I mean square.
That is why Jon Stewart is so happy about getting paid way more than bloggers.
Not really, but it could be.
The Jons and Ariannas should not compete, but rather default to the vision, not the process.
Jon Stewart is not moving to the right. He will, of course, poke fun at Obama; after all his job is to satirize those in power. But poking fun lovingly at competence is a lot different than ridiculing incompetence, as he has done beautifully to Bush and the whole crowd. As far as his take on blogging; most bloggers are consummate bores who just want to see their words in print. Self appointed pundits like Drudge are the face of bloggers, not serious journalists.
Arianna is wrong when she says that the best thing about blogging is that she can do it without an accent. When I read her writing, I hear her beautiful accent in my mind. As for Jon, I think he fully understands blogging and the value of it. I think he was just playing the devil's advocate; not everybody has to blog in order to appreciate it. His show, as a matter of fact, is very much like a blog.
My Dear Arianna, the Power to-be will always fear the power of the People.
I believe I understand one of your arguments as this: Bloggers are often more able to share their thoughts, opinions, their knowledges, their worries, their doubts as well as their hopes. People seeing brilliant as well as dumb arguments flying around , one or few “Experts” alone would have never been able to think of.
Alone through all that, we learn, know more and grow. But that is not everything, others learn as well, from the interactions of the various People's mind involved in a thread, which then becomes autarcic “peaceful agreement, agreement to disagree or simple stop and moves to the next.
Sure it is also a way for some minds to be peacefully and verbally violent or just crude.
But it is clearly a better and far more peaceful way for Societies as a whole – instead of alone our unquestionable self-interested Representatives - to deal with “conflicts”, even and primarily before conflicts begin.

You tell him Arianna, accent or not! He'll get it eventually . . . ;)
Geez... I expect at least a couple of smartass remarks, but for some reason Jon was obnoxious almost to the point of being unwatchable.

Now That was must-see teevee!

Huh?
Jon Stewart is not moving to the right. He will, of course, poke fun at Obama; after all his job is to satirize those in power. Like he said; He is going to miss Bush and the Republicans and the Republican media.
Democrats and Obama's competence are not going to be nearly as funny as the abject stupidity of the past 8 years.
You could see Jon wondering about the idea of "the first thought is the best thought."
I'll bet he spends most of his time refining and editing down the numerous comic idea's he and his writers come up with every day.
The problem is not lack of material. It is WAY too much material. And getting it down to 1/2 hour takes discipline and will.
Exactly the opposite of what Arianna was proposing.

His other thoughts, the reason he hasn't put it on his show would be a GOOD reason to blog about that.
