Arianna appeared on "Larry King Live" Friday night, which was being guest hosted by Tavis Smiley, where she discussed Obama's Afghanistan policy, the issues surrounding the administration's bank bailout, and the failures of the war on drugs. She was joined on the show by Garry Shandling and David Frum.

Arianna's is a very shrewd politician and business woman. However, I think I'll defer to the expertise of others when it comes to issues like the economic crisis and military operations in Afghanistan.
Obama is practicing a surge strategy just like what was so successful in Iraq. I am glad to hear it even though he was wrong about the surge in Iraq. I don't see dems criticizing Obama's surge strategy here. Why? Because they vote on emotion and not on the facts and reality. Obama needs cover and we need to back him they say. Even Harry Reid said don't use the word "surge". LOL What hypocrites and those that believe like him.
It's funny how Afghanistan and the war on drugs can be mentioned on the same show and not be linked. In the year 2001 the Taliban had managed to completely wipe out the poppy cultivation in Afghanistan which supplies 70% of the world heroin supply. Thats a staggering amount of liquid capitol easily laundered through various financial methods and made available to Wall St in the form of low interest loans. Today, opium production in Afghanistan greatly exceeds any pre 911 levels, despite the fact that the US military supposedly controls the country. As with anything if this life, follow the money, it will lead you to the truth.
Air America.
I think what Obama is doing by putting more forces on the ground is to escalate the war initially and put pressure on the insurgents and then bribe people away from Taliban. This is classic stick and carrot policy and how much it will succeed; only time will tell.

Another very important aspect is the increase in Afghan national army from 80000 to 134000. I believe that this is most important aspect of his speech as a strong central force will definitely have some impact on the overall situation. If the situation in Afghanistan stabilise to the extent that local army takes charge of the situation (even if the Taliban are not totally defeated) and foreign forces leave than situation in Pakistan will cool down as well.

The Marijuana laws are a real economy stimulator for people in the private prison business.

"Major investment companies describe private prisons as one of the best investment you can make. Right now in the United States of America, the biggest growth industry is the privatized prison complex."

There is so much money being made by people in private prison businesses that we will have to continually need to rethink the source of all this righteous indignation. The people that are building these prisons and profiting from them are the same top 1% who control Washington. These people have all the influence they need to make sure the media portrays a unified front of outrage and disgust for anyone promoting legalization. The fact that the current laws putting so many people behind bars for possession of marijuana destroys lives and makes the United States one of the most oppressive countries in the world means nothing to them.
We must put an end to so much suffering being had over something that is a million times more benevolent than cigarettes or alcohol. We must put an end to this phony outrage that is making billionaires at the taxpayers expense. People's lives are being destroyed so someone can make money on housing them in shackles. We are not cattle and we better stop these people from telling us that we must submit to such a vicious practice.
Welcome to our nightmare.
The march of death begins anew with a new generation, the Obama generation, and the ghosts of the dead, the nightmare, soon will swirl through the psyche of our president. Those of us who were
drafted in the sixties, those of us who have not slept, understand Joe Biden's reluctance
to hurl more napalm.
He knows what is about to transpire.
I'll pray for you Mr.Obama and Ms. Clinton. Welcome to our nightmare.
Sleep warm.
I can't watch Larry King. The commercial interruptions make me crazy.
Notice how everyone thinks they know what if best for the country. How can people feel this way without having all the facts. Remember that the POTUS has privy to info that none of us do. Anyway, Garry's humor is a relief and Travis has hated Obama for years, so he is just asking leading questions.
We are offering our ideas, that is what Obama asked us to do.
There is no "secret knowledge" the presidents gets that changes his whole world view. That is just a comforting myth to help us believe our leaders know what they are doing.
We are citizens, not subjects.
Keep sharing your ideas Folks!
This is democracy in action.
I agree that everyone has an opinion and the right and perhaps the duty to share those opinions. Like you I do believe that he is privy to information that the rest of the public doesn't have that he has to take into account. It's silly to believe otherwise. This country would have no real security if we all were privy to every bit of information that the POTUS has.
Blame it on Bush, but the days of just trust us are over. Funny how Bush's wars were all folly but Obama's wars are suddenly righteous.
Was that David Frum? I couldn't watch show to find out, Rachel is on other channel at same time. But, if it is David, he was either zonked or extremely tired. I think he is fabulous but hope he takes care of whatever his problem is. Sleep deprived? Not worth it. Maybe it isn't even he.
Get a TIVO, man.
Frum always looks to me like he just suffered a beating of some kind, or some severe verbal abuse. -Just my observation.
The trouble is, once a problem goes beyond two levels of complexity it is beyond the comprehension of the talking heads. These people simply don't understand how banking works. In case they haven't noticed, our money is not backed by gold or any other precious metal. The only money the banks have is money that is owed them, that is money they have loaned. The money is based on the likelihood that the money will be repaid. They both should watch the doumentary "Money as Debt" to begin to understand these things. The bolltom line is if the debts are bad the banks have no money. Also, the debts are hidden in your 401K. Maybe Arianna and the other people on this show don't need a 401K, but I really would like someone to sort out the toxic assets which are hidden there so I know how to retire.
The bailout money for AIG was so they could pay claims on bad debts. These debts may be in your investment portfolio, so ultimately the bailout money is protecting the investments of the ordinary American. I do believe that AIG and other companies receiving bailouts should not pay large bonuses while receiving these funds.
What failed here is not the business model, but the regulatory structure. The Republicans and the corporate Democrats figured out to get rid of the regulations. That's where the failure lies.
AIG money is most likely NOT protecting your 401K. That is rubbish. The AIG gift is to cover derivative instruments, i.e. CDS that are falling like rocks from the sky.
LET AIG, BANKS AND WALL STREET FAIL.
How naive can you be? If you think the banks can fail and your 401K type assets will be in tact then I have a bridge to sell you.
As beck wrote, the problem for Pres Obama in trying to solve this crisis is that the media anchors and pundits and most Americans don't understand the basic of economics 101 let along the intricacies of macroeconomics and the working of our banking and broader financial system. This is not a put down. It is a fact.
Until we are willing to educate ourselve, we will surely allow ourselves to continue to be side tracked and led down angry paths that may harm us more than help us. I am not saying we should blindly accept everything Pres Obama does, but we should be sure what we argue against we really understand. We shoul do not criticize merely because someone tells us to or because we feel we are getting revenge against those who let us down (ie those in Congress who supported deregulation and those financial and other corporate heads who act and continue to act out of greed).
Your money and future is very tied up in the decisions that are being made here, so don't forget it for a minute particularly if you have a 401K, IRA, pension or in some cases insurance.
Who the h. knows what to do about our very real enemies. But as Salmon Rushdie pointed out on "Real Time" tonight, Hezbollah's new official flag is a graphic of a mushroom cloud. One of their tenants is "bring on armageddon" -- they intend to get nuclear weapons in order to USE them, not just as a power playing chip on the world stage. As flags go, it's pretty effective!
.
Since Iran funds them, and Iran is working on the bomb, well hey... I think that's the scarier front. Certainly Hezbollah and Al Qaeda could be very cooperative with one another in the short term.
So. Anybody for being POTUS for a day? Any takers?...
It takes a Kenyan to raise a village.
"One of their tenants"??? malapropism-ize much?
I think the whole Iran nuclear weapon thing has been overhyped. Let's say they do develop one nuke that they smuggle into the US and detonate. What do you think the US response would be? It would be like facing a bunch of soldiers, who all have machine guns, rockets pointed at you and you have one bullet to fire at them. Would you start a fight with a group like that? It would be suicide for the whole country of Iran.
Put the shoe on the other foot. Being in their position, with US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, both on Iran's borders, and the USA saying, "We feel justified going into any country to affect regime change whenever we feel like it." How would you feel if you were Iran? Would you think, "Oh, the USA will never attack us?" Or, "The USA has shown it will attack any country in the Middle East on the slightest pretext and now, the Bush gang is talking about invading Iran. The only time they back off, as with N Korea, is when that country has a nuke. Should we get a nuke?"
What would you do if you were Iran?
So, do you check under your bed at night for Muslim terrorists hiding there?
This entire mess would be sort of akin to "The Andy Griffith Show" had it been the sheriff who was replaced by another, Deputy Fife & his bullet still patrolling ..........
Why the hell is Garry Shandling on the show? He doesn't have a single intelligent thing to say regarding any of these topics.
He makes more sense than Dennis Miller!
Arianna for President.
She could very well run for president. ..but after Obama two (hopeful) terms are up. I am no apologist. ..I think he is very smart and intelligent man. I happen to think that he has a great grasp of what is going on and understant the complexities like few other do. I am not ready to abandon him simply because he is not implementing my agenda.... when he ran his campaign.. .he spoke extensively about going into Afghanista n...I think few were listening then and now they are upset that there "great plan" is not enacted. The problem is NO ONE knows what that great and effective plan really is...every body as usual...si mply has an idea and that includes this president as well.
It is naive thinking that places knowledge in a few claiming that he "understands the complexities like few others do."
How did he get this knowledge? Is it divinely put to him? Did he get it from institutions that had Lawrence Summers as their President?
Until we as a country start believing in ourselves and are not willing to leave the military and the economy, to name two parts of government, in the hands of "experts" we will blindly follow them into another debacle.
How long has it been said that the economy is too difficult for outsiders to understand. It is not that difficult. It is called greed.
Military and political issues are also not too difficult to understand. It is called arrogance.
War with Pakistan?
I don't think that is a good idea.
They have just about 2/3 the population of the USA.
Not to mention nuclear weapons.
And India, also w/the nukes, just waiting for that golden opportunit y......... .
In no way does any of this make a lick of sense. Wrap it up, get back to American soil and begin defending our own borders.
