Arianna Criticizes Obama Over Bin Laden Ad

Posted: 04/30/2012 10:10 am

Arianna on Monday criticized the Obama campaign for questioning whether or not Mitt Romney would have killed Osama bin Laden in a recent attack ad.

Appearing on 'CBS This Morning', she said, "Using the Osama bin Laden assassination, killing, the great news that we had a year ago, in order to say basically that Obama did it and Romney might not have done it ... to turn it into a campaign ad is one of the most despicable things you can do."

She compared the ad to one that the Hillary Clinton campaign aired during the 2008 election.

"It's the same thing that HIllary Clinton did with the 3 A.M call, you know, 'you are not ready to be commander-in-chief'," she said.

Discussing the negative effects of such ads, Arianna said, "It's also what makes politicians and political leaders act irrationally when it comes to matter of war, because they're so afraid to be called wimps that they make decisions which are incredibly destructive to the country. I'm sure the president would not have escalated in Afghanistan if he was not as concerned as Democrats are that Republicans are going to use not escalating against them in a campaign."

I generally agree with Arianna, but not on this one. The ad is more than appropriate and tells it like it is. I can guarantee you that if the George or the Dick had gotten bin Ladin, we would have never heard the end of it. As we all saw, the Bush couldn't wait to announce his plans and start a war instead of keeping his mouth shut and just taking the responsible people out by stealth. His bad.

Trivia time people, Who was the only sitting U.S. President to ever wear a military uniform while in office,? Hint, mission accomplished.

The President has every right to ask the American People or the nominee of the republican Party if there actions would have been the same... In killing Bin Laden... My guess is they would never have been searching for him in the first place. As long as Bin Laden was alive, the republicans would have used him as a fear tactic on terrorism. THREE CHEERS FOR THE PRESIDENT.

I didn't like it when Bush was on that carrier in a military uniform and Obama speaking in front of the humvees with his matching Presidential seal was the same kind of posturing. Bush also deserves credit for putting the apparatus in place to get bib Laden, but I credit Obama with having the wisdom to continue those policies.

I don't get the outrage. Obama is on record saying he'd do exactly what he did regarding Bin Laden. Romney is on record criticizing Obama's stance at the time and saying he wouldn't do what Obama eventually did. So... what's so outrageous about asking whether Romney would've done it?

Hey, I actually agree with Arianna on this one!

What would the reaction be from the left had Romney run an ad saying Obama would never have gone into Afghanistan after 9/11?

She's right. Democrats will, as they always do, overplay their hand. It will backfire.

Average Americans know and are appreciate Obama gave the OK for the Osama raid. To spike the football and dance in the end zone like this makes Obama look weak and lame. As if he is overcompensating for his perceived weakness on foreign policy.

I can't believe his advisors were this short sighted. Their internals must be very very bad.

Republicans are right about one thing: Just because Mitt said he wouldn't send soldiers after bin laden in Pakistan, we should believe it, because he's probably said the opposite, too. The man takes every side of every issue.

Sorry, but Bush's whole re-election campaign was based on landing on a carrier in a flight suit, proclaiming mission acccomplished, and saying he started two wars and John Kerry wouldn't have.

why should Obama steer away from an actual mission accomplished for real reasons, not phony wmds?

and the fact is, Obama said in 2007 he'd send the boys in to get Osama in Pakistan, and Romney, McCain and more said that would be a bad idea.

This is one position I"m glad Romney has changed, but you don't defend america with an etch a sketch.

Good job, Ariana...and you're correct. Obama has the bad habit of hammering away at every issue until it is no longer valid or reasonable. It backfires and makes him look weak and lame. Of course, being on the side of right...I love it.

Thanks for telling the truth.

who said he'd send the boys into Pakistan and get osama if he had a chance? (Obama)

who said that would be a bad idea (romney, mccain, etc.)

another issue romney has changed his mind on, but pointing it out is why they call this a campaign.

Even though I was a Barack Obama supporter at the time and was somewhat annoyed by Hillary Clintton's 3 AM ad, I thought it was fair game. I think President Obama's ad is fair game, too. These ads ask tough questions. They challenge voters to think and to get informed, not be lazy low-information voters. My real concern is about all the blatantly false and misleading advertising funded by bottomless and largely anonymous Citizens United dollars. I am concerned about low-information voters who are easily misled by these ads, and by the wildly misinformed and angry, grossly intolerant voters who only listen to RW hate media. These ads on the other hand are provocative in a positive way, encouraging debate and better information.

I disagree with Arianna on this one. Mitt specifically said that he would not go into Pakistan without the permission of Pakistan. Anybody can say they would have done it after the fact and after it worked. Had our guys gotten captured, Romney would be saying "I would not have gone into Pakistan without the help of Pakistan's government". I guarantee you.

Arianna, you need to take another look at this. It is not about killing bin Laden, it is about going into a country without their permission to do it. Obama did it, Romney would not have. Too risky.

I completely disagree with Arianna. It's necessary for political campaigns to list accomplishments. Otherwise, you're left at the mercy of your opponent's misrepresentions and downright lies. President Obama decisively determined that entering Pakistan to take out Bin Laden was in the best interest of our country. Considering the many flip-flops of Mittney, it was a fair comparison. We have no idea what the man would do.
06:05 PM on 05/02/2012
Poor old Obama...he has nothing else on which to run except the heroism of Seal Team 6. I understand he was on the golf course when the news came in that they found Usama. The people are not going to give him another four years in which to destroy our country even further...just because he gave permission to carry out a mission with which he had nothing to do.

all those bad things republicans say about Mitt, if he wants to get negative.

The problem is that assassinating Bin Ladin was not in the best interests of our country. Our best interests would have been to arrest him and have a trial.
