Howard Fineman Discusses HuffPost-Patch GOP Outsiders Poll With Lawrence O'Donnell (VIDEO)

Posted: 09/27/11 10:48 PM ET

HuffPost's Howard Fineman appeared on MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell to discuss the results of the latest HuffPost-Patch GOP power outsiders poll.

The poll, a collaborative effort between HuffPost and Patch, showed that Rick Perry's debate performance has seriously hurt his popularity in key primary battlegrounds.

Perry was "plummeting like a stone among the grassroots people, the local influentials in [Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina]," Fineman said.

The poll spells bad news for Perry, whose late entry into the GOP primary was expected to upset Mitt Romney's lead.

"This isn't the pundits talking, these are local main street Republicans in these 3 states," he said. "That's terrible news for Rick Perry."

Fineman said that the poll underscored a growing dissatisfaction among voters for the GOP 2012 field.

"Republicans are still out there yearning for somebody who's really going to satisfy them on all fronts," he said.

The baggers are beggging christie to get in the race, they realize that the very same "party of NO" candidates aren't worth doodly squat...They spent 3 years doing everything possible to thwart Obama
and NOW they have to ACT presidential... They turn on themselves like dogs fighting for a bone when its obviously they have NO ideas and can't possibly beat Obama. I love it! It's better than wrestlemania... Keep begging while I vote against every republican I can.

Rush Limbaugh said today on radio that no one asked him to run. Hannity could be his VP. That way I could get them with one shot (vote)

C'mon H-Pee, how about you report the news instead of trying to be the news...

Who has enough false facts, rage, and unbending ideology to satisfy Republicans on all fronts?  One would have to have the willful ignorance of Perry, the false narratives of Bachmann, the stentorian voice of Cain, and the salesmanship of Chris Christy to satisfy the base.  What they are not looking for is an educated, reasonable fellow like a Huntsman who recognizes that science and human civilization has advanced in the last 100 years and who recognizes a need for some social programs to provide a safety net in society.

RP, I am so frustrated with every single bit of the fooishness going on that it all sickens me to my core. All Bachman and Cain are doing it pulling excess vote; but neither one succeed. Perry is totally frightening on so many levels, he gets my blood pressure up. Christy I think would be a mistake. If you are Republican, I too would prefer Huntsman-he "does seem intelligeant and a decent man."

I'm not sure what I despise more....the mainstream media's instant love affair with Rick Perry and ready to annoint him president OR now that they have turned on him on a dime, are going back to the RUN...CHRISTIE....RUN campaign.

They just can't sit back and cover the news. They just don't know how anymore.

Rick Perry is the Jethro Bodine of the 2012 Presidential race. Even looks like Jethro.

I almost feel sorry for the republican electorate. Their choices are the insane, the ignorant, the ignorant and insane and a couple of corporate shills thrown in for good measure.

That would be interesting to see one of them get in the race, but they all have one thing in common, screeching about how bad the other side is and how screwed up one person or another is within their own group. Like vultures, they feast on anything with the driving force being money in their pocket.

If Parry came from another state then maybe he would have a better chance. Looks like Williard (mit's real name) is going to be the GOP one. I wonder if O's campaign really wanted Romny to be the candidate. That may be an even better opponent for them as he is dull.

TRUST me, you don't want Perry. I live here, I know. I don't know why we should insult a "sack of stones" when describing Ricky...what have stones ever done to deserve such a slur?: Perry is NO choice. He makes Dubya look like a rocket scientist.

Obama does NOT want to run against Romney. Obama would clean Perry's clock in a debate. Because the 2012 election is about the economy, in a GENERAL election, Romney poses the greatest challenge to Obama.
