HuffPost reporter Sam Stein appeared on "The Rachel Maddow Show" Tuesday night to discuss President Barack Obama's call on Democratic voters Monday to regain their enthusiasm in the run up to November's midterm elections.

Obama's softer appeal contrasted with the White House's recent criticisms of liberal "whining," what Maddow termed the "punch the hippie" strategy.

"It was much more motivational than scolding, which is what we've seen from the White House in the past couple days, if not weeks," Stein told Maddow. "When you tell voters to come out because there's more to achieve, it's much more effectual than saying, 'Stop whining, we've done all this, now go vote again.'"
