In this Sept. 16, 2007 file photo, Conan O'Brien holds the awards for outstanding writing for a variety, music or comedy program for "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" at the Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. Jimmy Fallon's debut as the new host of "Late Night" will come online, not on television. Fallon, who will take over the NBC show when its current host, O'Brien, replaces Jay Leno on "Tonight" in 2009, will hone his approach in brief Internet shows, "Late Night" producer Lorne Michaels said Sunday, July 20, 2008. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) _ Conan O'Brien will take over the "Tonight" show next June _ and what happens to deposed host Jay Leno after that is anybody's guess.

Leno's last show will be Friday, May 29, and O'Brien will start the following Monday, June 1, NBC executives told a Television Critics Association meeting Monday.

NBC is angling to keep Leno with NBC Universal but the late-night king has indicated he's ready to jump ship. Eager NBC competitors, including other networks and syndicators, are prepared to help him make the leap.

Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff, NBC Entertainment co-chairmen, were asked about the specter of Leno being hired by ABC and overpowering O'Brien and top-rated "Tonight."

"We really believe in the decisions we've made with our partners, including Jay," and stand by them, Silverman replied.

Graboff disagreed with the premise of the question, saying talks aimed at keeping Leno within NBC Universal post-"Tonight" are continuing.

But, Graboff added, "we've made our decision, we're happy with it, we're very confident the `Tonight' show will remain dominant in its time period."

Despite its prime-time woes, NBC has managed to maintain its late-night ratings dominance, although O'Brien has been challenged lately by Craig Ferguson on CBS. Now NBC is attempting a tricky transition based on a promise made nearly four years ago that O'Brien would succeed Leno.

The network attempted to defuse the issue Monday with humor: Leno was seated among the press corps, disguised as a bald, bearded reporter who was armed with questions about himself.

But the exchange came off as more pointed than funny, unlike a similar staged encounter between ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel and a network executive last week at the critics' meeting.

Kimmel, identifying himself as a Florida newspaper reporter, tweaked his bosses as he posed questions about his job security if Leno comes to ABC; Leno, on the other hand, represents a threat to NBC if he goes elsewhere.

"(Green Bay Packers quarterback) Brett Favre retired and then wanted to come back," Leno said to Silverman and Graboff. "The Packers said no. What do you make of that?"

Favre retired in early March but recently expressed second thoughts about playing in 2008. The change of heart has drawn lukewarm enthusiasm from the Packers, who spent the offseason planning to move ahead with Aaron Rodgers as their starter _ akin to the O'Brien-Leno switch.

"Everyone's entitled to change their mind. But I'd imagine that puts management in an impossible situation," Silverman replied, gamely.

"Is it true you've offered Leno a fifth hour on the `Today' show?" Leno said.

"That's a great idea, actually," Silverman said.

Nah, replied Leno, "It's a crappy idea."

Jimmy Fallon is poised to take over O'Brien's "Late Night" in March or April of 2009, after honing his approach in brief Internet shows, Silverman and Graboff said.

O'Brien will wrap his "Late Night" run sometime in the first quarter of the year, with exact dates to be determined, the executives said. O'Brien reruns will fill the gap until Fallon takes over.

It's about time Leno disappears. I wish the networks would just show movies at night. Movies from the 30's up until the 70's with the occasional newer one.

Good riddance. This guy (Leno) hasn't been funny since 1993. It's just so sad that Conan had to spend his best years languishing in such dead-zone time-slot, taking second banana to a guy that didn't deserve to be treated as favorably as he has. I just hope that Conan doesn't go all Letterman and lame out. (Though I guess it's inevitable.)

Conan O'Brien is an imbecile and a lousy interviewer. NBC is making a huge mistake.

Letterman should book Leno as a guest on Conan's first night.

I like Conan but , he's just not funny and is boring to watch -- I think his tenure on the Tonite Show won't last long due to low ratings. Craig Fergusan on the other hand , is funny and if CBS plays their cards right , will have a big winner when its time for Letterman to retire.

Ferguson would be funny if he would drink again. Conan is very funny and Leno is funny to my grandparents.

I like Leno. I don't watch Leno. I watch Dave when I watch. I have watched Leno in the past but it seems the institution that IS the Tonight Show has always caused Leno to "hold back." So it's good he's leaving. He needs to get edgier, a little darker. It's in him. Maybe Leno should do an HBO weekly show, trading off-seasons with Bill Maher (better yet, make a deal with up-and-comer Showtime?)

I love Conan finally getting the Tonight Show, he has definitely earned it, and Jimmy Fallon taking his spot on Late Night, is almost more than I can handle, he is brilliantly funny, just like O'Brien. I love this new line-up, once again, I will be staying up too late.

I totally agree about Craig! But I really enjoyed Jimmy on SNL, especially Weekend Update, so I'm hopeful he will do well.

Fallon and O'Brien == the bottom of the comedy barrel. Conan is juvenile, thinks he is so cute and funny, but it just isn't so.

Fallon is stiff, wooden and about as funny as a broken leg. If he doesn't have a cue card to stare at constantly he can't utter a comprehensible sentence. NBC is clearly losing it with these two.

When they're on, my TV will be dark. When Leno is on, it will be worth watching. He's a class act, a real people person, and can be very funny.

The only comment I can make about Letterman is that I think he's a jerk. I used to watch him but then discovered Leno who is much, much more entertaining.

Agreed. Conan stinks. I'm so tired of all of his worn-out schtick. Every time I see him do that stupid puppet thing, where he pretends he's got strings attached to his hips, I turn the channel. What a freakin' idiot. And he can't do an interview. His questions are dumb, he spends more time talking than his guests, and when he has someone on who's funny he spends the entire interview talking over them and trying to top their jokes. The guy's an idiot.

Conan laughs at all his own jokes. He's very stuck on himself and seems vain and conceited.
