BRASILIA, Brazil — The Brazilian Supreme Court has issued a public apology for a message sent on its Twitter account calling for the president of the Senate to resign.

A note posted on the court's website says its Twitter account was improperly used by a court employee to issue "inappropriate messages for which this court offers its deepest apologies."

The employee's identity hasn't been released and the court declines to say if the person has been fired.

The Twitter message sent Tuesday says Senate president Jose Sarney should follow the example of soccer great Ronaldo, who announced his retirement from the game Monday.

The 80-year-old Sarney was Brazil's president from 1985 to 1990.
