CHICAGO — Chicago cabbies will get a city hearing on their proposal to raise fares by 22 percent even though they didn't collect the required number of signatures on their petition.

In a news release, the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection and Alderman Anthony Beale said the hearing will take place in about six or seven months.

The office said Beale wants to wait for a hearing until a new ordinance takes effect in July that's designed to make cabs more fuel efficient and, among other things, makes permanent a $1 fuel surcharge that cabbies now add onto fares.

The release said the cabbies fell short of collecting the required number of signatures because hundreds of the ones they got were invalid.
