BERLIN — Germany says two of its citizens were temporarily detained in India after their ship was allegedly involved in a fatal collision with a local fishing boat.
The Foreign Ministry says the two German seamen have been released on bail in the port of Chennai while Indian authorities investigate the incident in which one fisherman reportedly died.
Ministry spokesman Martin Schaefer told reporters in Berlin on Wednesday that the men were receiving consular assistance. It was unclear when the incident happened.
Two Italian marines face trial in India over the deaths of two fishermen killed last year. The Italians were guarding a cargo ship when they allegedly mistook the fishermen for pirates. The incident has fueled tensions between the two governments.
