The stock market's record-breaking rally paused Monday, as investors assessed whether stock valuations are overstating the recent improvement in the economy. Even a report that showed April retail sales unexpectedly rose failed to give stocks a lift.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 26.81 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 15,091.68.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index was little changed at 1,633.77.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 2.21 points, or 0.06 percent, to 3,438.79.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,987.54 points, or 15.2 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 207.58 points, or 14.6 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 419.28 points, or 13.9 percent.
