PARIS — France's Foreign Ministry says it is strengthening security measures, hiring more guards and buying new equipment to help protect French facilities abroad amid shifting threats.

Ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot said Wednesday that the measures are being applied primarily in Africa and the Middle East, but did not name a specific threat as a reason for the move.

France has been on increased alert for terrorist attacks since launching a military campaign against Islamic extremists in Mali earlier this year.

Last month, a car bomb exploded outside the French Embassy in Libya's capital, wounding three.

Lalliot says the new security effort will be funded in part by the sale of French property abroad. He declined to say how much the measures would cost.
