MIAMI — A spokesman for the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay says nearly all prisoners on hunger strike have eaten in the last 24 hours.

Army Maj. Gordon Campbell says the military still classifies 102 prisoners as being on hunger strike. The reason is because the military requires a period of sustained eating over several days before they will stop classifying someone as being on hunger strike.

Campbell said Friday that 99 of the 102 prisoners have now eaten at least one meal in the past 24 hours. The protest has gone on for more than four months.

Lawyers for the prisoners have said they believe the protest will continue until the U.S. government resumes sending men back to their home countries. The U.S. holds 166 prisoners at Guantanamo.
