ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER GLITCH; A technical fault halted trading on the Nasdaq exchange for most of Thursday afternoon. The snafu echoed other recent technology mishaps, such the sudden plunge in stocks in May 2010 that came to be known as the "flash crash" and the glitch-plagued initial public offering of Facebook last year.

LOSING STREAK STOPS: The Dow Jones industrial average ended its losing streak at six days. Encouraging economic data from China and Europe bolstered the prospects for better global growth early. The Standard & Poor's 500 index had its best day since Aug. 1.

STILL PLAYING CATCH-UP: Hewlett-Packard slumped 12.5 percent, its biggest one-day drop in almost 11 months, after the company reported weak demand for personal computers and falling revenue. Like many PC makers, Hewlett-Packard was slow to respond to the shift to mobile computing.
