ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — Authorities in southwest Oregon say a helicopter carrying two state employees conducting fish counts crashed into the South Umpqua River, injuring the biologists and the pilot.

Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department spokeswoman Meghan Dugan told The Roseburg News-Review ( Monday that biologist Holly Huchko suffered a broken back and biologist Eric Himmelreich had a broken vertebra.

One of the Bell Jet Ranger helicopter's owners identified the pilot as 55-year-old Fred Wittlake and said the man suffered a broken arm and broken ribs.

The crash knocked down some power lines. A hazardous materials team put absorbent material across the river to contain spilled fuel.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

The helicopter went down Monday near Days Creek, about 200 miles south of Portland.
