KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — An American man was detained at a Nepal airport over the weekend with seven bullets in his baggage, police said Monday.
The man, identified as Leonard John David Rubin from Alaska, has been held in custody since Saturday, said police official Rewati Dhakal.
Rubin arrived in Nepal on Friday and was taking a domestic flight the following day in the capital, Katmandu, when security guards found the bullets in his luggage, Dhakal said.
Rubin's hometown was not immediately available. He was being held at a detention center in Katmandu.
Dhakal said that Rubin is facing charges of violating the Public Offense Act. Government Administrator Basanta Raj Gautam said that Rubin could face six months in prison and a 10,000 rupees ($100) fine if convicted.
Calls to the U.S. Embassy seeking comment were not immediately returned Monday.
