FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Chaz Williams had 26 points and eight assists, Derrick Gordon made a go-ahead layup with 8 seconds remaining and No. 16 Massachusetts beat George Mason 88-87 on Wednesday night.
The Minutemen (15-1, 3-0 Atlantic 10) rallied from eight points down in the second half to win their sixth straight.
Sherrod Wright scored 26 points to lead the Patriots (7-10, 0-3), who lost for the eighth time in 10 games. George Mason was seeking its first win over a ranked opponent in over six years.
Williams, who entered the game second in the country in assists at 7.5 per game, shot 11 for 17 from the field — including a layup to draw the Minutemen to 87-86 with 18 seconds remaining.
The second of two late turnovers by Wright, on a steal in the backcourt by Williams, led to Gordon's game-winner off a missed layup by Williams.
