Occupy Wall Street: HuffPost Bloggers Weigh in

Posted: 10/17/11 02:09 PM ET

Who could have thought that what began as just a few protesters gathered outside of Zuccotti Park in New York on September 17 would flourish into a worldwide movement in nearly every major city in the Western world one month later?

The key tenet unifying the Wall Street protesters with their supporters worldwide is the belief that they represent the "99 percent;" a number that symbolizes the vast swathes of modern society who are believe to have been left behind in the aftermath of the financial crash. While the self-described "leaderless resistance movement" is criticized for what some see as a lack of a central agenda, others such as HuffPost blogger Al Gore, hail it as "true grassroots" protest, "pointing out the flaws in our system."

With that, here is the very best of HuffPost bloggers sounding off on #occupywallstreet, including Dylan Ratigan, Suze Orman, Stephen Schlesinger and Jim Wallis. What's your take?

Lessons From Spain: "Los Indignados," Occupy Wall Street, and the Failure of the Status Quo
Just as solutions to the problems facing Europe and America are not going to be found in traditional political ways, the truth of what's happening is not going to be found in traditional media coverage either.

My take is one of a centrist, and I get a funny feeling in my tummy when I see and mostly hear one party be blamed for all our ills. And no thanks, I don't want any one that is not qualified to perform an MRI on such vital issues as our economy, foreing medling and the defence of this country!

I lost the last job that supported me in 2008. My 99 weeks of unemployment ran out last year. I ended up on General Relief and food stamps. (I made a very good living as a technical writer, copywriter and graphic designer and have ALWAYS been able to support myself. I have a great deal of experience and amazing, diverse skills - none of that seems to matter) I lost my apartment (of 9 years) for non-payment of rent in January. I have no family, and no friends offered to take me in. I was facing homelessness at 61 years of age. I was accepted by a Homeless Prevention and Relocation program, and placed in a tiny, grubby, cockroach-ridden apartment (along with other "rescued" homeless people, many of whom are mentally unbalanced). The homeless prevention program only lasts for a year; my year ends next January (4 days before my birthday). I still have no job (although I send out over 75 resumes a month, on average), the money is almost gone, and, in January - if I don't find work - I'll have nowhere to go. I, too, am the 99%. I've been saying for a long time, that Americans should be marching in the streets to express our anger and frustration (to politicians and the 1% who have all the money). Thanks to OWS, we finally are.

Waiting for monetary collapse to usher in a RBE

The movement needs to grow to have impact. Each day it is growing but unfortunately, until money gets out of the 'powers to be' over our society worldwide, it could fail. It is those same powers that are continually creating fear in people so they will not have time to learn about what is happening with our shadow governments. OWS is actually those who have been involved in other movements for some time. Search on line for 'resourced based economy'. Good luck in your future. I can't imagine being in your place at that age since I am of the same age. I feel your pain.
