A Decade After: HuffPost Bloggers Commemorate September 11th Anniversary

Posted: 09/08/11 11:31 AM ET

In her introduction for HuffPost's "9/11: A Decade After" feature page, Arianna Huffington writes that, "Practically every facet of our society was altered by 9/11 in some way, either by the attacks themselves, or, especially, by our response to the attacks -- a response that continues to evolve. Looking back ten years later we can finally begin to get a sense of just how the country was changed, and what elements of our society we'd previously taken for granted."

Indeed, much has changed in the past decade, and to commemorate this tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Huffington Post bloggers have shared their reflections and remembrances of that tragedy and its aftermath. From survivor stories to taking on religious, political and global ramifications, here is our collection of the very best opinion, analysis and heartfelt expression from our valued contributors. 9/11: A Decade After
Practically every facet of our society was altered by 9/11 in some way, either by the attacks themselves, or, especially, by our response to the attacks -- a response that continues to evolve. Looking back ten years later we can finally begin to get a sense of just how the country was changed, and what elements of our society we'd previously taken for granted. Starting today, with a special section titled "9/11: A Decade After", we will be examining those changes from all angles, collecting stories from across all of HuffPost, from the economy to national security, politics, education, parenting, pop culture, and the arts. The conversation starts here.

HuffPost's Matt Sledge reports on the heavily policed area around Ground Zero:

On Sunday, for one day at least, the many layers of protection between the outside world and the 9/11 Memorial Plaza seemed less like a burden and more like a blanket. The day after Bin Laden died, the police officers in this neighborhood walked the streets with a swagger. But today the NYPD, the Port Authority police, the state police, the park rangers, the Secret Service -- all walked with a bearing that seemed to say they knew this shift was more than just a job.

Military jets escorted an American Airlines plane to a safe landing at New York City's JFK Airport on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

NBC LA reports that the two F-16 fighter jets were called into action after three passengers refused to come out of a bathroom on a flight originating in Los Angeles.

There was initially some confusion as to whether the jets had been called, with NBC New York noting that a security official first said fighter jets had been launched and then another security official said they had been set to launch.

A law enforcement official told the AP that the incident isn't thought to be terrorism.

NEW YORK -- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a group of 9/11 family members on Sunday she was glad they finally had a memorial to call their own, and doubly satisfied that Osama Bin Laden was dead in time for the commemoration.

"As we commemorate the opening of the memorial, we know that we still have work to do to bring all those who were part of attacking us to justice," Clinton told scores at a luncheon hosted by Voices of September 11, a non-profit advocacy group for 9/11 family members.

"But I can tell you it was a particular satisfaction for me, as a former senator of New York, to be in the team in the Obama administration that made sure Bin Laden was brought to justice."

That line received a loud round of applause.

In line with the Obama administration's guidelines for commemorating the tenth anniversary of 9/11, Clinton also sought to show that the attacks did not stop with America.

"Our diplomats are out in the field and in cyberspace exposing al Qaeda's hypocrisy and brutality, and the enormous toll it has inflicted, above all on Muslims," Clinton said.

"Even though the United States, thankfully, has not experienced another attack since 9/11, London has, Madrid has, Mumbai has, Islamabad has, Jakarta, Bali -- other places continue to be attacked."

"We don't want to just capture and kill terrorist leaders, we want to make them irrelevant," she noted.

September 11,2001 was indeed a dark day for America, but must be kept in context to other dark days in our history. Many civilian lives were lost that day but thousands more of our military have been lost since then. In each previous war there have been tens of thousands of lives taken in the preservation of our freedom. In the Korean Conflict which still has not official ended there are eight thousand American Soldiers not accounted for. It is well for us to remember those lives as well.

The shallowness and condescending nature of Huffington Post's entire "special coverage" of nine eleven is a bit strange and unsatisfying. For example, there is not one article featured in any "headline" sort of way about the sacrifices and continuing health problems of the rescue workers, or the Federal boondoggle that refuses to care for those people. Lots of facts with predictable spin attached to them. Really, all in all this coverage is rather lame and weak. I am an American Indian, one who carried Sacred Pipes and a ceremony to this place shortly after nine eleven. I could see at that time the great open heart of the world was with us. Now, they are not, and even the respected Media, such as this one, cannot search deeper than ten cent platitudes and generic copy and paste opinion blather. Reality? Whither hast thou wandered....

This poem really resonated with me. I can't believe it's been 10 years.

September 11… I will never forget feeling scared and vulnerable… I will never forget feeling the deep sad loss of so many lives… I will never forget the smell of the smoke that reached across the water and delivered a deep feeling of doom into my gut… I will never forget feeling the boosted sense of unity and pride… I will never forget seeing the courageous actions of so many men and women… I will never forget seeing people of all backgrounds working together in community… I will never forget seeing what hate can destroy… I will never forget seeing what love can heal… - Steve Maraboli

It's odd that amid all the hooplah about 9-11 no one -- that I've seen -- has seen fit to discuss the attackers' main motivation: America's relationship with Israel. Judging from the coverage on this site and most other media outlets, one might conclude that the attackers decided to attack America merely because they resented our abundance of Starbucks. Of course, such shallow coverage is typical, especially in foreign affairs. And America's peculiar relationship with Israel has become That Which Must Not Be Spoken in corporate media circles. It's all very odd and unpleasant, and more evidence that America is rapidly becoming just another police state in a world that has too many of them already.

I see two Americas. One America wants to build, to resurrect, to go on and to thrive. One America, I believe, a large part of America wants the so called war on terror to finally end and to stop killing thousands. It ten long years, so much money and blood wasted on wars that did not much to end terrorism but to create a HUGE business to promote terrorists. I see one America want to still be vigilant but not over reactive, to still stand for the things we have always professed to be about.

I see another America which is in constant fear, wages never ending wars and cheers at the deaths of as many humans possible. I see the two Americas in constant war with each other and not helping the nation lift itself out of the economic morass created by those who KNEW Americans would not be interested enough to understand and even acquiesce to the vicious banksters who have created an economic monster this nation seems NOT to have a clue how to agree to fix. I see this America returning to its hateful past by trying to take down America's first attempt at equalizing the nation by electing a part African American president. Which America will win? I hope the first but if I suspect it is not.
12:48 AM on 09/10/2011
If you see an America that "cheers at the deaths of as many humans as possible" I would like to know what planet this America is on. I see this accusation as specious. I am proud of our brave soldiers keeping us safe, liberating millions from Saddam Hussain, and freeing the women of Afghanistan. I see an American where millions want to come and live and I see an optimistic America who are standing up to a government that has grown too large and onerous----and who have no concern about our president's skin color. Save your accusations for Syria.

The women of Afghanistans HAVE NOT been saved. What kind of fairy tale world do you live in? The millions that were liberated from Saddam Hussein were the million Iraqis killed as COLLATERAL damage as a result of OUR presence there.

We'd probably be better off dwelling on the fact that we sent 6000 more Americans to their deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan and squandered trillions in borrowed money that made us no safer than we were on 9/10. Maybe then we could be a little more objective when the next tragedy strikes.

I live by the Pentagon and watched the American Airlines plane zoom by me, a silver streak that exploded into the building seconds later. My neighborhood was one of the only avenues away from the Pentagon since the highways that border the Pentagon had been all closed. An underpass allowed people to exit in my direction. All day, military friends who worked in the Pentagon came to my house because there was no way to drive home. Other friends who had witnessed the crash came by because they had to talk to someone. I will never forget that day.

I was recently interviewed by a reporter regarding my 9/11 experience as a Red Cross Disaster volunteer located in Connecticut. The bottom line for myself and other volunteers was: We all wanted to be able to do something, anything in the moments, hours, weeks and then months after, and yet for all of our disaster training, there was little that could be done, except to be there for others and hope they were there for us.

I remember!... I was at work and hearing a co-worker shout “they have attacked the World Trade Center in NY, that will be WW 3 she said”!!
I’m born 1948 in post war Germany, remembering the aftermath and distraction such a war can cause. I thought my legs will give away under me…at that moment I realized a fear that I had never experienced before; sadness overcame me for these people trapped in these buildings. Sadness for their loved ones, sadness for the people trying to rescue them. A profound sadness for humanity…days later I would drive in my car and when I could get eye contact with other drivers on the road, I seen that same fear…and a recognition that we’re all in this together. I truly believe that that day our Democracy was attacked and we had a horrible decade after that…hurricanes, flooding, crimes committed to our economy, the finality of the eradication of the US labor force realized, and while all these terrible things are not directly consequences of 9/11, but have you ever been down and out, and nothing goes right and things just start to pile up and you don’t pay attention to what is in front of you. Well that is what happened to us...it is time to get up dust our self’s off and show them who we are. I hope this weekend’s memorial and celebration will do just that.

I am deeply saddened by what happened on 9/11. I am in the fire dept so it makes me even sadder that so many in the fire dept were killed. I am also saddened by the fact the our government used this tragedy to go to war in Iraq. I have been trying to do humanitarian work in Iraq. I have talking to these pple and getting to know them, working to bring peace to their country. I met a man from Iraq and fell in love with him. I thought it would be easy to marry him and bring him here to live with me. I was so wrong. I called immigration services and asked for info on visas and what i had to do to get him one. The woman I spoke with told me not to waste my time and my money because if he's from that f------- country he will never be allowed in this one. and she hung up on me. That has been the attitude of a lot of the pple in this country towards the pple of Iraq. I am doing my best to change that. I think it is wrong that I can't marry the man that I love just because he is from Iraq. The Iraqi pple didnt have anything to do with the tragedy of 9/11 but yet they are being blamed for it. The Iraqi pple are not terrorists as they are being called.
