The Great Wake-Up Program: What Helps You Fall Asleep?

In the many conversations that I've had with friends, family and coworkers since starting the Great Wake-Up Program, I've learned a lot. Some of the most interesting conversations I have had revolve around people's idiosyncrasies regarding sleep. Now, I definitely have some weird sleep habits, which I will gladly share, but some of the ones I've heard recently are ... well ... see for yourself.

Bedroom temperature was a topic that came up repeatedly. According to experts, your body cools down significantly once you are asleep. However, many people, myself included, like to snuggle under the covers. To fall asleep, I like a sheet, a blanket and a comforter piled on top of me.

That means I need the room to be cool enough to accommodate all three layers. I've heard all sorts of variations of this, ranging from people having separate summer and winter blankets/quilts to keeping bedrooms at Arctic Tundra-like temperatures. I have a friend who cannot sleep unless her air conditioner is on full blast, while another friend only sleeps with the windows open, no matter what the temperature is outside.

Speaking of cool temperatures, many people brought up what I will call the "cold side of the pillow" phenomenon. Why do we all like the colder side of the pillow so much? This notion is so widely recognized, songwriters have even incorporated it into their songs (see Snow Patrol's "Crack the Shutters," for example). The only reason I can come up with is comfort -- we simply like the feel of the coolness against our faces.

As a reader of women's magazines since I was a teenager, I know the "way I sleep reveals something about my personality." According to these articles, I'm likely self-centered and bossy (in regards to sleep, that is), since I like to sprawl out in the middle of the bed. I really don't think the word self-centered is accurate; I would simply call myself bed-centered. I just like being able to move around (as evidenced by my 25+ wake-ups each night)! And bossy? Hardly. But if you're on my side of the bed, I will push you over.

About half the people I spoke with told me they sleep better when someone else is sleeping next to them, whereas the other half were more comfortable when they were alone in the bed. I found out quite a few couples use twin beds pushed together. That way, each person has their own space and can move around without disturbing the other, but they are still technically in the same bed.

There are even high-tech beds that have different firmness numbers so couples can share the same bed, even if they have different mattress preferences. This prevents one person from waking the other if they move around too much (sort of like what the Lark system accomplishes with the private un-alarm clock).

Since we spend a lot of our time in bed, it's important for us to be comfortable. It's amazing how many things we can add to the simple structure of bed frame plus mattress to make our beds so unique. Foam mattress pads add an extra layer of plushness; extra pillows could be used for decoration and/or comfort; blankets, quilts and throws could be used for warmth; and the list goes on and on. Sleep is an important part of life, so we might as well make our beds as sleep inducing as possible!

I have also been told that many people fall asleep with the television on. As I noted in my previous blog post, I've read that the use of electronics can stimulate your brain and possibly prevent you from falling asleep. That said, I couldn't fall asleep with the TV on if I tried -- not only do I have glasses that need to be taken off before I really doze off (I'm always so nervous I will break them!), but I can't sleep with noise. I also can't sleep if it's too light in my room. Thankfully, black-out curtains were invented. Many people can, and do, fall asleep to the television, though, relying on the sleep timer to shut it off a few hours after they fall asleep.

I've really been trying to pay closer attention to my sleep habits since the start of this experiment, and I'm learning a lot about myself and what my body and mind require for a restful sleep. I always sleep better if I do my aerobic workout in the afternoon or evening and if I watch something "lite" on TV right before going to sleep,like a half hour comedy episode

With so much technology around us sleeping has become harder to do each day... Laptops, PC, tablet, phones, games, and Facebook, Twitter.. How can you ever sleep? lol. But sleeping is very important for health reasons... many reasons..

Best sleep is in a cold room with blankets and just my head sticking out. As for falling asleep, the biggest no-no is THINKING. About ANYTHING, good or bad; it ain't gonna help you! I try to picture a color or a chant, but a great bucolic, pastoral scene is the best. Focus on it until it starts to move, and then you get a wonderful feeling that you're almost asleep (or are asleep already)! Never fails. Oh, and booze is the WORST. You'll be up at 3 am either with a headache or needing to urinate, and that's the end of that night's good rest!

My sleep habits have been backwards all my life. I have an awful time getting to sleep at night. I take a prescribed sleep medication, and it is not ambien, that stuff made me sleep eat! lol But once the sun comes up, I can sleep in an instant, anywhere, and in any enviroment...noisy, bright, warm or cold. When I met my husband, he did a pretty good job at "training" me to sleep at night. I still have issues with getting to sleep, but once there my dreams are so vivid. :)

Maybe I'm lucky, I rarely have sleep problems.

First, we have a great pillow top mattress - firm but cushy.

Second, we put the ceiling fan on it's lowest setting as we both hate stagnant air.

Third, I sleep butt naked (try it if you don't), as does my wife. There is absolutely nothing more conducive to a good nights sleep than snuggling up next to her warm, soft body.

Eating lightly - especially in the evening - and being in synch with the daylight helps. I get up early (@ 4:30 am), take an hour's nap sometime in the afternoon, and get to bed by 10:00 pm. I refrain from eating after dinner, having observed that late night snacking keeps me up at least an hour too late, then I awaken with a "food hangover," feel groggy and hungry (for empty calories) throughout the day, and then suddenly come evening, I'm over-energized, and want to snack and stay up too late. I'm so glad I broke that cycle!

Some of the symptoms of magnesium depletion include: stress, inability to sleep, fatigue and low energy. I sleep so solid now that I've got my magnesium in balance. What Helps You Fall Asleep?

.........A big bottle of Pinot Grigio and 3 mini's of Smirnoff Green Apple Vodka makes me fall asleep.......or is it pass out?

Either way, falling asleep isn't the problem. Wanting to wake up is.

Booze is a killer for sleep. I can conk out on a bottle of wine, too, but without fail, around 3 am my bladder is full or my head is throbbing, and getting back to sleep then is much harder.

alcohol deregulates your blood sugar. that's why you wake up after 3 hrs. or that's what i've been told.

Recently I've started saying prayers every night as I fall asleep. I start listing the things I'm thankful for and the people I'm thinking of and half the time I fall asleep before I get to "Amen".

I have gotten into the habit of turning off the T.V. and listening to various Podcast until I fall asleep. It works pretty well as there is no light and I keep it at a very low volume. I also bump the A/C down to 70 at bedtime. The key to getting into a good sleep schedule is waking at the same time everyday regardless of what time you went to sleep the night before.

We have a memory foam mattress and I love it. I have joints that get sore on a regular mattress, but memory foam saved the day for me. Plus, when hubby gets up to take a leak, he doesn't wake me up.

We have a very thin light electric blanket, and we leave it on the bed in summer (turned off) because we both sleep better under some kind of blanket and this one is very light. And we invested in some really nice plump feather pillows, they work better on my neck than the foam kind.

Some evening exercise is therapeutic for me, I try to do something physical to get tired out because my job is very sedentary. It's better not to drink much of anything for the last two hours before bedtime, and that way I don't run to the potty during the night, at least not more than once.

And with this regime, I usually fall asleep in about 5 minutes or less and sleep 6-7 hours most of the time, which for me is sufficient to feel decent the next day.
