5 Boozy Milkshakes for Summer

Posted: 08/16/11 01:55 PM ET

Want to add a little more decadence to your next milkshake? Add a splash of booze! This summer, bartenders around the country are spiking their frosty favorites with everything from tequila to bourbon to crème de menthe, and we couldn't be happier. Seriously, ice cream never tasted better.

These look great.

I like Mudslides:

1 oz vodka
1 oz Kahlua® coffee liqueur
1 oz Bailey's® Irish cream
1 scoop coffee ice cream (or chocolate or vanilla)
Blend and serve.

They missed the best one of all, the Baileys shake. Use to be a featured item at Red Robin. Just your normal chocolate shake ( rich vanilla ice cream, milk and chocolate sauce) plus a shot of Baileys Irish Cream. Heaven!

When are people going to stop calling a frappe a milkshake? Milkshakes have NO ICECREAM. The best soda fountains in history can attest to that. Until the last 20 years or so, when someone decided that a milkshake is made like a frappe. I think Friendly's started it. I'm all for adding the alchohol, but if I want a frappe, I'll ask for a frappe. In a restaurant you can ask for a chocolate milk to be put on the blender... costs less too.

Lady, speak for yourself. My mom would fix milkshakes that included ice cream back in the 1960s and 1970s (far before the "last 20 years or so" that you mention). In point of fact, there's evidence that an ice cream based milkshake was made as far back as 1922. (I'll also point out that "frappe" was a regional name for "milkshake.")

I don't know what "soda fountains" you're referring to since there haven't been many soda fountains in the US since the mid-to-late 1970s. Any attesting is pure speculation on your part.

I grew up on Frozen Brandy Alexander milkshakes.
They originally were served as a dessert at a local restaurant
but we started just serving them at home even if we hadn't eaten :- )
Too simple...in a blender w/ a double milkshake blade
add 5 scoops of coffee ice cream and 2 oz of Napoleon Brandy
Blend, pour in to 2 tall chilled glasses, top w/a dash of nutmeg and drink w/a straw.

You have to have the apple pie and bacon with bourbon milkshake or the Banana's Foster milkshake with rum at B-Spot Burgers (Iron Chef Michael Symon's burger joint) here in Cleveland. Words cannot describe the deliciousness.

Booze was simply the only way to make ice cream better than it is already.
