It is said that there was once a man who made it a habit to separate himself from society so that he could reflect on his existence. One day, this man was walking along a deserted beach at sunset. While walking, he could see a young boy in the distance. As he drew nearer he noticed that the boy kept bending down, picking something up and throwing it into the water. Time and again he kept hurling these things into the ocean. As the man approached even closer, he realized the boy was picking up starfish and throwing them back into the water.

Intrigued, the man asked the boy what he was doing. The boy replied, "I am throwing these washed-up starfish back into the ocean."

"But," said the man, "You can't possibly save them all, there are thousands on this beach, and this must be happening on hundreds of beaches along the coast. You can't possibly make a difference."

The boy looked down, frowning for a moment. Then he bent down to pick up another starfish, smiling as he threw it back into the sea. He replied, "It made a difference to that one."

What is it that keeps us from believing that we, as individuals, can make a change? Although we understand that as humans we cannot do everything, we still have the ability to do something. When we see that opportunity in front of us to go out and make a difference for someone or something, we should not hesitate. What keeps us from showing compassion to others, and even to ourselves? Make an intention today. We can all start implementing compassion in our lives with actions that seem as small as saving a starfish.
