At the House GOP retreat this weekend Minority Whip Eric Cantor made the following crack about Health and Human Services designee, Tom Daschle.
"It's easier for the other side to advocate for higher taxes because you know what?"... "They don't pay 'em!"
In 2003, Representative Cantor failed to report or pay for the expense of a fundraiser that then "super lobbyist" Jack Abramoff held for him at his D.C. restaurant. Though it was a clear violation of the federal election law, Cantor's spokesperson referred to his oversight as "a paperwork issue" and referred to the controversy as "chicken droppings."
I guess congressional Democrats could say the following about Cantor:
"It was easy for Representative Cantor to have Jack Abramoff illegally subsidize his federal campaign account because you know what? ... He believes election law violations are just paperwork."

I wonder how much Cantor's wife has failed to pay over the years? And why did Cindy McCain insist on hiding her tax forms and actual investments, assets, and partnerships from public scrutiny?
Has anyone ever heard of any wealthy person going bankrupt because they couldn't pay their TAXES, rather than some boneheaded business venture or personal action they made? The tax issue is usually raised because they got caught not paying the requisite taxes over several years. A single year failure, tied with business losses, is a write-off. No omne "loses their business" because of tax policies.
And what's particularly crass about this is that the wealthy didn't have a tax increase at all under the stimulus plan. It's simply that they didn't get the immense tax cuts that the Republicans were demanding...like McCain's "payroll tax holiday" that would have allowed corporations to no longer pay their share of Social Security, Medicare and Unemployment insurance. That was a "screw the workers/bankrupt these funds" plan.
Since you don't like Cantor saying it, allow me:
It's easy for Democrats to advocate higher taxes because they don't pay them.
I would also like to say that it's easy for certain Democrats to advocate energy conservation because they keep the oval office hot enough to "grow orchids in there" and they cruise around in 100 foot houseboats when taking a break from their 10,000 square foot homes.
As opposed to the certain Republicans who do the exact same thing?? ALL of the people in Congress and the White House are rich (or became rich upon leaving the White House in Clinton's case....) There are some that are rich simply based upon their salaries and perks, but NONE of them is poor!
The fact of the matter is that it's NOT just that Democrats aren't paying their taxes, it's that RICH people aren't paying their taxes!!
I was about to say. Thank you for saying what I was thinking.
