A Week In John McCain's Shoes — His $520 Ferragamo Loafers, That Is

Posted: 7/30/08

This summer John McCain is traveling in style. He has worn a pair of $520 black leather Ferragamo shoes on every recent campaign stop — from a news conference with the Dalai Lama to a supermarket visit in Bethlehem, PA. The Calfskin loafers, with silver-tone "Gancini" buckles, are imported from Italy.

In response to Barack Obama's foreign tour, McCain spent much of his energy last week emphasizing his focus on domestic issues. What better way to show his American pride than to tour the country in Italian leather?

In spite of all the media's hype about Senator Obama's purported "arrogant" and "uppity" personality that skips over all that he has accomplished in spite of his humble beginnings, the only biographical narrative offered by the media for Senator McCain is his POW experience -- nothing about McCain's marriages, his temper, or his privileged lifestyle. Tonight (Tuesday) Rachael Maddow attempted to get a word in about it and was immediately shut down by the entire panel on "Race for the White House." They all rushed in to shut her up before she could even finish her sentence. It was appalling. While the media is unreserved about mentioning Obama's taste for arugula, they completely censor truthful representations of McCain's personality and lifestyle. We hear every detail about everyone who ever knew Obama; why don't we hear anything about the Keating Five or the Fife Scandal? WHERE ARE ALL THE HONEST JOURNALISTS???

His wife is rich, what do you expect. He left his first wife for money. What, now you want him to shop for shoes at KMART. $520.00 is nothing to Cindy and John.

Psst, Psst, this same SALVATORES(as I call them) can be had from 30 to 40% off twice a year(July and January) at their semi-annual sales, but only at a FERRAGAMO Store(not at a Dept. Store).
They're really a bargain for the price and WHAT A SHOE; you don't have to brek them in.
There's nothing like a SALVATORE.

Wow!!!!!!!!!! $520?????? That's like more than Edwards haircut!!!!!!!

But, but, but McSame is supposed to be a regular shmoe like me.

I don't have any shoes that cost anywhere near $520.

Betcha Barack doesn't either.

How come the $500 shoes didn't make it into the mass media - like the $400. haircut did?
Hmmmm. . . Is the difference as simple as Republican vs. Democrat, or which political party is
actually being the bigger elitist?

Is there really a difference? Especially since the 8 wealthiest US Senators are all democrats.

If only we had a real 3rd party !

this will hardly get a mention on tv , unless obama was wearing them. and if obama was wearing them talk radio would do the groundwork for spreading the word.
03:05 PM on 08/01/2008
And why does Obama play such an "elitist" sport like basketball (think of all those country clubs where they play basketball...) instead of a non-elitist sport like GOLF?
07:02 AM on 08/02/2008
Some people can't play basketball because of health issues (my knees can't take it). I'm not really sure how $520 dollar shoes really matter in this campaign. People have a right to spend their money the way they want to. Even if I had plenty of money, I wouldn't spend $520 on a pair of shoes. I'm a cheap engineer. Their are plenty of people that play basketball. I belong to 24 Hour Fitness and in Houston they usually have a basketball gym. There are plenty of golfers in Houston. So why shouldn't people have a choice on what sport they want to participate and have a choice to how they want to spend their money. I do a lot of bicycling and I have people ask me how much they spend on a bicycle (after they decide that they want to try bicycling). I tell them, if they are going to ride 2-5 miles a week, go to Walmart and buy the cheapest bike. If their @ss is going to be on it for 100 miles a week, then buy a good one. Maybe John McCain is expecting to walk a lot of miles in those shoes.

You missed the point completely. The issue is why are the media and the McCain campaign accusing Obama of elitism? I think has ever right, with his millions of money, to buy a $520.00 shoe. But please don't try to sell him as a common man who is in touch with needs of the people.
02:44 PM on 08/01/2008
Okay, so maybe those are his favorite pair of shoes seeing as he wears them a lot. Or do you think he has more than one pair?
12:29 PM on 08/01/2008
You know, if any Democrats are going to criticize John McCain for "marrying a rich chick" they need to step back a moment and consider their last Presidential candidate, John Kerry. The man marries a wealthy widow who own the Heinz corporation and obviuosly has not hurt for money since. Do you ever see John Kerry sporting Wal Mart clothes? Of course not! I remember the photos of him on this little hunting trip as part of his ploy to look like a "regular joe" in response to the fact that GW Bush has been a long time outdoorsman and sportsman. In the photo, Kerry was clothed in some brand new top of the line designer "outdoor" clothes. Not the kind of thing a real hunter or outdoorsman, like myself, would ever wear. So remember, if you are going to criticize John McCain for the shoes he wears, consider the shoes that Mrs. Heinz-Kerry buys for her John-John when they go shopping!
01:35 PM on 08/01/2008
first off, that was 4 years ago. second, the reason people are mentioning this is precisely because republicans made such a stink about Kerry being married to a rich chick and about edwards having a $400 haircut. Now their own nominee is wearing $520 shoes, and somehow i doubt rush limbaugh or anyone @ Fox will criticize him for it.

Ya think? I thought they were fair and balanced. The truth in broadcasting, etc
So it was o.k. for the Rplcns to use this arguement that he is not a man of the people- it is not ok for Dems to use?
It is important to a ot of people that our Leaders know our lives and understand how regular people live- what their concerns are. I am not saying rich people are are not good people or it is wrong to be rich- only that they cannot know these things like a regular man,[or woman].
Barack has 4 pair of shoes. He is a regular guy. just sayin.

Well, Kerry didn't divorce a wife who waited for 5 vyrs for him to come home from captivity, nor did he divorce the wife who waited after a car-wreck ruined her beauty. Shades of Newt Gingrich.

When you marry the milliaire wife you can afford those shoes!!!

It becomes a problem when an idiot like McSame purposely uses the term 'Elitist' as a slur against his opponent without remembering that he and his own wife are living higher on the hog than any of his own constituents, or any other citizen, for that matter. Kinda defines the term 'elitist', doesn't it?

And they call Obama Elitist and he has been wearing suits that have been five to six years old...Until they made enough money to buy a few more.....What the heck are these Republicans and pundits talking about? Do they have any idea that there is such a thing as cameras and internet in this world? Why doesn't the MSM report on his lobbyist connections and where he is getting his favors from.....They won't...They love him.

Cause he has been buddy-in it up with so called "journalists' for years at many of his thirteen palatial homes. BBQs at the "Cabin" in Sedona, beers and Mojito's , celebrity charity pawties, cocktails and evening dress affairs. Since the Mccains have more money than God, they can put on quite the suarre' [how do you spell that?]
They do love him. People outside Az don't know anything about the Keating five or Fife Symington scandals , or any of the other dirt- if Obama was at the bottom of his class,[instead- he was elected Pres Harvard Law Review], they would repeat adnauseum
