If Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has a shred of self-respect left, he will resign in the wake of the shocking news that his wife, Ginny Thomas, left a message for Anita Hill at her office at Brandeis University, demanding that she apologize for supposedly besmirching her husband's reputation two decades ago before the Senate. Thomas claims that she was extending an "olive branch."

Some olive branch. It sounded more like harassment, which is why the FBI is now investigating, as the New York Times reports.

It's bad enough that Thomas has been agitating against the Obama administration by founding a shadowy nonprofit group called "Liberty Central." While her actions are not illegal, they bring further discredit upon her husband. He will doubtless view the hubbub as further evidence of his status as a victim of the liberal media elite.

He is anything but. Thomas, who has achieved the remarkable feat of compiling the most retrograde record on the Supreme Court, is also its most unimpressive member. For the other members of the Court, however, it must be painful to watch the shenanigans of his wife, who is either witless or gratuitously nasty, or, more likely, both, tarnish the institution, which is already becoming dangerously politicized by its right-wing members, who appear to shrink at nothing when it comes to engaging in judicial activism, as long as it fits their own political predilections.

But on a purely human level, it is disgusting as well that Anita Hill, who had the fortitude to tell the truth in the face of right-wing obloquy, has to endure the intrusive and ugly meddling of Thomas' wife who clearly has no conscience, let alone a soul. No one should be in doubt about the character of either Thomas.

Update: It seems that Anita Hill was uncertain whether or not the call was a prank, which is why she turned it over to the police and wanted the FBI to check it out. But at a minimum I think the call is an embarrassment and constitutes a form of harassment.

It was very painful on yesterday to listen to Orin Hatch on MSNBC spout off all of the virtues of Clarence Thomas and claim that he (Hatch) was all knowing because he was there (leading the hearing). He kept repeating that Clarence would never lie, and when he asked Clarance up front if he did those things, Clarence said no so that was proof that Clarence didn't do what Hill said he did, because Clarence was the most honest person he knew and Clarence would never lie,... It was all so ridiculously overblown. Nothing has changed.

I know that Thurgood is rolling over and over in his grave.

Well-said, Jacob! The Thomas nomination was craven from the start when President George I said he wanted the "best man for the job." He didn't even have the decency to say "person." Clarence Thomas was only 41, on the bench for all of a year. His mentor Danforth and other senators disgraced themselves protecting him, attacking her. In the end, at the 52-48 vote, the truth didn't matter anymore (to most.) Only one senator stood up on the floor and said she was telling the truth.

...It is disgusting that Anita Hill, who had the fortitude to tell the truth in the face of right-wing obloquy...' Too bad that this author does not have any proof to show that Hill lied, or told the truth.

If Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has a shred of self-respect left, he will resign . . .

He doesn't and he won't. Clarence Thomas is a sad, warped man who's been elevated to a position requiring intellect and judgement that he doesn't have. He'll never retire, considering his continued presence on the bench of our highest court as some kind of fitting revenge for every slight he's ever suffered. Bush One nominated him because he was the only AA he could find who would be a reliable conservative vote. And he's been an embarrassment ever since.

Yep. Let us not forget why he was chosen; Bush's "conservative base" was angry that Bush had chosen Souter who all of a sudden became a "liberal" because he didn't rule in favor of overturning Roe v. Wade. Thomas was chosen purely for his ideology, not his legal knowledge, ethics and skills. He's the lowest rated judge by the ABA out of anyone sitting on the Supreme Court.

How self-important does Anita Hill think she is? I've heard a transcript of the call it in no way warranted a call to the FBI.

Jacob, it all comes down to where you should have stopped . . .

If Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has a shred of self-respect left, he will resign.

That's all that needed to be said without any further consideration of the latest Anita Hill issue.

Must have been a 3 stooges olive branch...right in the kisser! Please, Clarence, go find a small business somewhere.

I would describe Mrs. Thomas as smug, self satisfied, and clueless. As per an article in (I think) WaPo, at the time of the hearing, she believed that Anita Hill's testimony was the result of unrequited love.

Anita Hill couldn't have him so she would ruin his chances at having a SC seat.

Only the really clueless but supportive wife of Clarence Thomas could believe that.

Resign? Heck, I'm pretty sure "nasty phone calls from spouses of justices toward those participating in judiciary hearings regarding said justice" is grounds for impeachment under Article II, Section IV of the Constitution. Impeach Thomas!

Maybe Clarence is tired of being the invisible justice. Lohan gets more face time in the media. So he got his wife to being back the only thing that Clarence has ever been known for. A coke can.

I think Anita Hill set the right tone when she called the phone message "inappropriate."

Is that what right-wingers call an olive branch?

That was no olive branch, it was a demand for an apology.

Anita Hill took a lie detector test, administered by the foremost expert in the field.

Clarence Thomas was offered the same test but refused.
