The explosion of street art continued at a rapid pace this year, with a new generation of artists joining 30-year veterans in this ever-morphing ephemeral art movement. Every week we posted new stuff on "Images of the Week," and here are 50 images culled from the collection that stood out in 2010. Take a look and vote on your favorite.

International man of mystery, Banksy, managed to hit up a number of cities across the US this year in what appeared to be a coordinated marketing campaign for his documentary, "Exit Through the Giftshop" - See our review from the New York preview.

This is truly the art of our time.

As an oil painter myself (among other things), I do appreciate the craft and talent evident in many of these pieces. This is the way some of these street artists will graduate into becoming real artists who don't have to run when other people come to see their work being created.

(Finally, I do distinguish the quite valuable "street artist" from the common street annoyance and the bane of big cities like New York, the "tagger" who just wants to put their unintelligible mark in as many places as they can.)

Thanks for these comments Tom. We like to look at the art on the streets as part of a continuum that includes the classics, the outsider, the political, the artisanal, among others. The mediums would appear unlimited.
Many people would say that some of these Street Artists have already graduated into becoming real artists, while others are still in development. What is equally significant to us is that it has become a diverse movement that short circuits the established route for an artist to take to gain an audience.

These artists are truly reflecting our era; they're doing what you don't see in many, many galleries under the "seal of approval" of the art establishment. These are the artists people will be talking about in 100 years from now, if we still exist as a race. Thanks for documenting this astonishing work.

Thank you Carmen. We agree, sometimes change comes from the grassroots, and today's Street Art looks like it contains some of the seeds for our future.
