Could it be because Penn's always voted Republican?
There are a lot of hard things about running for office, like asking all of your friends for money, but the single hardest thing for any candidate to understand, whether they are running for The White House or The State House or the City Council is that the consultant class that rules the legacy side of the Democratic party are, as a group, absolutely incompetent.
I don't mean they are not so great, not so smart, but absolutely completely incompetent.
Candidates just don't get this.
I have a friend who raised a lot of money, $300,000 plus to run in a Congressional contested primary. His consultant told him it wasn't worth spending $1,000 a month on blog outreach. He got whacked 70-30 in a primary by someone embraced by the netroots.
In races all around the country, consultants right now are steering candidates to direct mail and television - direct mail! It boggles the mind.
Bob Shrum, Tad Devine and their partners destroyed the Kerry Campaign with their complete misunderstanding of who John Kerry was but what the effect of the Swift Boaters would be.
Now, as there is at least the possibility that Senator Clinton's campaign is done, there is this tidbit about Mark Penn, someone whose company will be paid over $10,000,000 by the Clinton Campaign -- this is from TIME Magazine:
As aides looked over the campaign calendar, chief strategist Mark Penn confidently predicted that an early win in California would put her over the top because she would pick up all the state's 370 delegates. It sounded smart, but as every high school civics student now knows, Penn was wrong: Democrats, unlike the Republicans, apportion their delegates according to vote totals, rather than allowing any state to award them winner-take-all. Sitting nearby, veteran Democratic insider Harold M. Ickes, who had helped write those rules, was horrified -- and let Penn know it. "How can it possibly be," Ickes asked, "that the much vaunted chief strategist doesn't understand proportional allocation?"
That is not a mistake, that is not someone who is a little off, that is a moment that should make every candidate pause, but it won't - because their consultant will tell them - don't worry about it.

Your first sentence said it all.
A poster points to Obama as contradicting your point. But Obama is simply succeeding despite the incompetence of capaign managers. Obama is unknown nationally. The public wants someone they don't know over everyone they do know, cuz those well known political names are responsible for putting us where we are,
Obama's campaign managers are not incompetent. They may not be perfect, but the one area that shows the massive competence gap between the Clinton and Obama campaigns is the fact that Obama's people work together and don't spend time fighting amongst themselves, because they were hired for qualities other than extreme loyalty to the candidate.
If they truly were at all incompetent, Obama would not be in the position he is today.
You are wrong about that. I was hooked on Senator Obama since the very first speech I heard. Some people have it, others do not. Senator Clinton never had it. That the Obama campaign is successful is because they are well organized and they work hard. And they happen to have read the rules, too.
Sorry to disagree with you Mr. Boyce but David Axelrod does not fit your mold. He was able to take an unknown State Senator from Illinois and, because he was Black and unknown, propelled him to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States. His proven record, developed when he got Deval Patrick elected as Governor of Mass. made him the perfect strategist for Barack Obama's campaign. Except for when Obama went off script, his plan has worked perfectly and this is how he did it.

Even you have to admit that his gameplan was brilliant and has probably worked. Too bad he has potentially destroyed the Democratic Party in the process by ruining the legacy of two good Democrats and alienating almost 50 percent of the Party.
Which two good democrats are we talking about? And why would 50% of the party be alienated? There are no poll numbers to prove that.
Not such a great argument, since they were nearly identical campaigns--right down to much of the rhetoric, policy plans, and--yes--speeches. Are we to believe that this means everyone is supposed to vote for David Axelrod in November, and that Senator Obama is simply the creation of a ruthless Svengali? (I am not suggesting that it is so--but, your comment begs the question)
The ruining of of the legacy of two good Democrats was their own doing not that of David Axelrod. I also do not believe that 50% of the Party feels alienated. The policies of Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are not that different and represent the world view of the Democratic Party. It has been a hard fought race but it is time to unite and support our candidate. I am a 51 year old white woman in Texas who strongly supports Senator Obama. I heard him speak in Dallas 3 years ago and was struck by his belief in the ability of all races, ages, sexual orientation, income groups, etc. to come together for the good of the American people. I knew then that I would support him if he ever decided to run for President. He is expanding the Party and that is good for the Democratic Party. If you look at your own life can you honestly say that voting Republican would be a good idea this year? I think not...
