Rather than advertise toughness against a target like Hillary Clinton, show what you can do against a tough Republican.

The New York Times and others are suggesting the Obama campaign wants to do something new. Looking to bash Hillary isn't something that strikes me as the ingredient Democrats are looking for. Bashing Giuliani or some other leading candidate for the Republicans is more likely to attract primary support.

Polls showing possible head-to head-outcomes, a year before the actual vote, are only mildly interesting. Ask president Dukakis. Elections are tough, and lately, almost like warfare against a string of Republicans who learned how to win by ripping the bark off Democrats.

But rather than advertise toughness against a target like Hillary Clinton, show what you can do against a tough Republican.

Can a Democratic nominee find a way to explain why Giuliani or some other leading Republican would be a really bad choice to vote for? There certainly seems to be plenty of material to work with. Since leaving office Giuliani has lobbied for big pharma, profited off the Iraq security boondoggles, and pretty much abandoned the bill of rights. There must be something that can find its way into a sound bite.

A lot of Democratic voters are looking to support a candidate who can give as good as the Republicans have been dishing lately.

And, there's always the economy. Most voters are busy, so give us memorable talking points. How will our children have a chance in this increasingly competitive global economy, and how can we retire without having to move to a developing country to maintain a decent standard of living.? If you know, tell us.
