GOP Devoured by Their Own Creation

What's Your Reaction:

When angry mobs disrupted healthcare reform town halls last summer, the first warning shots were fired. Back then Republican Party leadership appeared amused by the ruckus being created, believing they would ride the crest of this discontent to victory. They may not have shared the "birther" angst or "death panel" rage, but they played with these notions, and with a wink and a nod sought to use them to their advantage.

At that time I warned that the economic insecurity on which the GOP leadership was preying, and the anger with which they were toying, could ultimately turn on them and devour them first. And now after a half dozen or so highly charged Republican primary contests, it appears that this is exactly what has happened.

With Palin and the Tea Party acting as the chief cheerleaders and Newt, Beck and Rush -- the boys charged with pouring gasoline on the bonfire -- the GOP no longer looks like the Party of Lincoln. In fact, it doesn't even look like the party of Reagan anymore. No tears should be shed for the grey men in expensive suits who fed the fire and stoked the flames. They got burned and that's what happens. While some debate whether this is good for Democrats in November, my concern is less with what will happen in the election and more importantly what the success of this movement of malcontents will mean for civil discourse and our democracy.

The GOP hasn't been devoured by their own creation. To the contrary they are being redefined by their constituents. For two long both Republicans and Democrats have been told who the candidates are going to be by central comittees. The Tea Party are telling the party who they want to run. I think the people picking the candidate is the right approach. You are watching the rebirth of conservative values in the Republican party.

Such a classy response.

Talk about "fanning the fire"! From the beginning the media has dismissed the T-Party as a "movement of malcontents"" (your rather mild label) or simply "nut bags". The media pundits don't seem to understand that that the more they ridicule and discount these people, the more they turn against the "civil discourse" that they are expected to engage in. Dialogue is a two-way street. Maybe they do have something worth while to say, but the liberal media seems unwilling to hear it.

Perhaps they do have something worthwhile to say, but not in the random clips I've seen. It's difficult to enter into a reasoned dialogue with people who, when asked why Obama is bad, respond with "he wants to ban fishing".

I had the same reaction these past few election cycles. The way the crowds disrupted the
town hall gatherings didn't seem organic at all but more the cause of the right fanning the
flames. At the time, I thought, there is no way they can let go of this snake without
getting bitten and now watching them trying to get a handle on this seems like just desserts.

Extremism, in either direction, can easily win primaries. But in the general election you have to pull people from the center to win. This is not something the Tea Party candidates can do. Not to mention that by brining in all these brand new people, these states are losing leadership positions on major committees and sub-committees and with in their party.
10:30 AM on 09/16/2010
Take a look at the tea party rallies vs. the anti-capitalism rallies everytime the g8, g12, etc meet. Only one set of rallies feature destroyed property and cops in riot gear. The people causing this damage are all on the political left.
10:54 AM on 09/16/2010
The left never sadi they don't have any nut bags of their own. However we are smart enough to keep them out of the legistalture. The right is not doing so well. The member of the Tea Party Movement may not be rioting in the streets, but that is becasue it is much easier to subvert from within. ANd while they may not use physical violence, they spread hate just as nicely-spitting on Congressmen, using racial slurs.
11:24 AM on 09/16/2010
And the people beating on them are all on the political right. Back under your rock!

Election fraud, Bush, Iraq, Tea Party, Right wing hate. These are the billboards on the worlds stage by which we have shown the peoples of the world that say ' Beware, Corruption and greed wreck democracies.' The show is not over though. Perhaps by exposing our weaknesses we can again find our strengths.

Don't exaggerate the importance the Tea Party.
They succeeded because a minority can sway primaries with low turnout. Elections are different.

The Tea Party is less powerful than many third-parties Presidential candidates have been.

As a regressive movement, the Tea Party is not as significant as was George Wallace.

Thank you, a voice of reason. The tea party movement is more of a media sideshow like the balloon boy then anything else. You are certainly right, elections are different. And we will see how things turn out then. Fanned.

"...my concern is less with what will happen in the election and more importantly what the success of this movement of malcontents will mean for civil discourse and our democracy. "

First, we have a republic, not a democracy.

It seems that there is a growing rage among the people that Huffpost readers enjoy trashing all the time - you know, the common people that live in the middle of the country. The kind of people who build and fix and farm. The kind of people you look down your noses at and make fun of.

These are the people who send their sons off to fight our imperial wars, and bury them when they return in boxes. The people who have worked hard all of their lives, but still get crapped on by the financial and government elites. They are deeply angry, because their lives are now being destroyed by governments and large businesses. They are losing their homes and farms in heartbreaking numbers. They are not far from becoming destitute.

If you ever took the time to really know these folks then you would understand why they are so angry. Angry enough to pull your world apart. They are the Sons of Martha, and they make your world. If they withdraw consent to be governed then our present government will fall. Beware the fury of the patient man....

i think the gop base has moved further to the hate and vitriol. it has always been there, but i love the way this article calls them on their behavior, being secretly gleeful about all the things being spread and incited, thinking of it as just another opportunity. i feel no sympathy.

The statement “what the success of this movement of malcontents will mean for civil discourse and our democracy” is the most dangerous part of this movement. This movement is not about the deficits, high taxes, healthcare, bailouts, stimulus, financial reform, energy reform, education reform, foreign policy reform or any of the other good things President Obama is getting done for our Nation’s future. It is about the fact that they lost, they lost to a Democrat, and they lost to a Black Man! They are blinded by their hate and prejudices, and this is their fuel that drives them. Manipulating them for financial gain was easy. Especially when those who are profiting the most from this movement are controlling the delivery of and the message. The scariest part of all is the message is pure propaganda based on deliberate misinformation, focusing on the hate and prejudices to create fear and more hate and prejudices, among these tea partiers. The tea partiers at the health care town halls were mostly folks receiving government aid or political operatives. The folks wearing guns and yelling they are over taxed most likely do not pay taxes and get their income tax check in January.
Here’s the big question; say the Democrats pick up seats in the House and the Senate, which is quite possible (for there are more rational Americans than not), what will happen?

It is truly hard to fathom how anyone could be farther off base than you are. You simply don't have a clue as to what motivates the movement and you obviously can't follow polls either. There is no question that the Democrats will be losing seats this November. The only question is how many.

Well if the Americans are stupid enough to vote in these scab racist Teabaggers. Then hey it is what the Americans deserve.
Just remember Teabaggers you probably won't get a Coalition of the Willing for your next round of wars. You may be darlings at home, but overseas you will remind the world of the Ugly American.

Now what we need is a progressive movement with a populist bent to attack and destroy the Democratic party from within.

To me this is about corporatist vs populist and not dem/repub or left/right or liberal/conservative or even capitalism/socialism. It is about the people taking back the government from special interests, especially multinational corporations and banks, and the entrenched bureaucracy that serves these special interests. Both the Democratic party and Republican party are part of this entrenched bureaucracy.
09:45 AM on 09/16/2010
If what you say were true we wouldn't see huge corporate interests driving the Teabaggers. Freedom Works is the antithesis of populism.

The corporate interests see the potential in these grass roots movements and want to harness it for their purposes to be sure. And now that some Teabagger candidates have won primaries, the Republican establishment will try to hijack the Teabagger movement. But those are reactions.
The Teabagger movement is born out of frustration with the Establishment Republican party which they have come to realize does not represent them at all. This morning I read a Glenn Greenwald column that speaks about this. If you are interested:

I see, and the Tea Party are all about taking the country back from special interests? Don't be absurd, they are about returning it to the Bush era, as are Repubs.

There is no connection between the Tea Party and Dems. And fact is, a third party cannot win. Not seats in Congress, not the Presidency. The Tea Party can't win either of them.

Your call to destroy Dems is a call to elect Repubs, period.

I am not talking about winning anything except primaries. I am talking about shaking up both parties. It is not just the Repubs that serve corporate and other special interests. The Democratic establishment does as well. Neither party cares at all about the majority (98 - 99%) of the citizens.

Your call to continue with the Dems as they are now will just continue the status quo. The ststus quo is two unwinnable wars that are bankrupting the country, expansion of government powers at the expense of civil liberties, eliminating the last renmants of the social safety nets, elimination of social security, etc..The Democratic president with a clear mandate and with control of both Congress and the Senate are continuing and even expanding this status quo.
08:58 AM on 09/16/2010
Is any of this really new? It seems to me to be a mere continuation of what's been happening in the Republican party for several decades. The Republican base, stoked by the party's leadership, keeps moving further to the right and Democrats keep anticipating that the moneyed leadership has created a monster that will finally devour the party. It hasn't happened so far. Instead they've succeeded brilliantly so far in moving the center of our political discourse ever rightward. I'm not one to overestimate the average American voter, so I'm not sanguine that the Republican party has finally gone too far with the crazed teabaggers. Pretty scary.

You may be right. I hope you're not. But every time I figure that they've jumped of the cliff of sanity, the idiot herd jumps too.

I am a freshman at Quinnipiac University this fall. Turning 18 on the move in day, I am one of the younger kids in my class but that didnt bother bother me this birthday seeing as being born in August allows me to vote in the November midterm elections. What I was surprised about, however, when I mentioned my excitement to vote to my fellow 18-year-olds, was that a majority of them are not registered to vote and do not expect to vote in the upcoming elections. I could not believe it. This is the reason the Tea Party has such success, so few people are voting! That is the real reason behind all the madness and upsets in this year's primary's; they rally their people and bring them to the polls. My generation has the ability to upset the Tea Party's ambitions but to do so they MUST vote! Kids today are more liberal socially than ever and when this country is messed up from Tea Party control, they will be asking how it happened but it would be their own fault. To my fellow young people out there I urge you to take action and go to the polls. Shape your generations impact in your nation!
09:14 AM on 09/16/2010
Good for you. You sound like a good well balanced person. I am retired and honstly I thought I would sit this election out-until I saw the emergence of the tea party. I am going to the polls and voting dem -these folks just scare me.

Stupid and self righteous is probably the worst combintion to have and right now those two qualities command a very high premium in the electibility on the right. (Angle, O'Donnel, Miller, Paul et al). You have people like Fiorina who fired 30,000 workers and was voted top 20 worst CEOs by her own kind, running on a jobs agenda !?

Hopefully this is a passing phase-else we are in serious trouble-one only needs to look at countries ruled by fundamental folks to see where we might end up.
