Helen Thomas

What's Your Reaction:

For years now Helen Thomas has been a challenging voice asking tough questions and refusing to accept evasions from White House spokespersons whose job it is to give as little information as possible. She never let go. During the lead up to the Iraq war, when too many of her colleagues were playing stenographer taking White House dictation, Helen was the ornery one demanding the truth. She was carrying the torch of a free press when many of her colleagues were unable to acknowledge that there was one to carry. Respect is due this woman. We owe her service and courage more than eye rolls and scorn.

In the incident under discussion, Helen Thomas clearly misspoke. She has admitted as much, apologized, and resigned from her post. It is a shame that her career ends this way. But Helen should be honored and revered for her decades of professionalism, not remembered for one mistake.

It would be an even bigger shame if the likes of Ari Fleischer and Sarah Palin were viewed as victors in this affair. Where was their indignation when Rush Limbaugh was making disgraceful and insulting comments about African Americans, gays, Muslims, and women and then was hosted and toasted at the White House? And did they speak out when Pat Robertson was making bizarre pronouncements connecting the devastation of Katrina or Ariel Sharon's stroke with God's justice? If I thought they understood shame, I would advise them to feel some.

I like how you progressives justify a mediocre reporter at best. You cherish her time not her work. No one sites or can remember any great report she wrote. Her list of great quotes = 1. "Jews go Home." Her literary history is already forgotten. Her knowledge of history is clearly zero. Even though she was around when the United Nations granted Israel independence. Where do you think the 12 tribes of Abraham settled? Palestinian culture does not exist. Name one author, artist, artifact that is unique to be Palestinian. I don't know of any.

Helen Thomas has been a very biased and poor reporter for several years. She certainly shouldn't have been granted her highly coveted White House press corps "diva" status, as she has long been an ideologue and columnist. Her thinly veiled bigotry has been an "open secret" for a long time. It's a relief that she finally tripped up and revealed herself. Her comment was probably the most truthful thing she's ever said, as it exposed her inner biases for the world to see. Thankfully, we all can disregard any further comments from her as ever being truly objective for the duration of her rapidly disintegrating career.

The pro-Israel bias of 90% of her colleagues is acceptable though, right?

I cannot believe how stupid you left-wing ideologues are. Your Saint Helen has not been a journalist for 25 years. "A journalist collects and disseminates information about current events, people, trends, and issues."
When a person injects opionion into facts, they are no longer journalist. "Generally, publishers and consumers of journalism draw a distinction between reporting — "just the facts" — and opinion writing, often by restricting opinion columns to the editorial page and its facing or "op-ed" (opposite the editorials) page."
Your opinion of Isreal is based on your total lack of understanding history. If you think that Palestine should be restored, then why are you not whining about the land that Jordan, Lebanon and Syria hold? "As a geographic term, Palestine can refer to "ancient Palestine," an area that today includes Israel and the Israeli-occupied[2] Palestinian territories, as well as part of Jordan, and some of both Lebanon and Syria."
At the time when Isreal was reestablished they did not kick out the Palestines. They tried to live in peace and accept the U.N. 2 states. "The Jewish community accepted the plan,[69] but the Arab League and Arab Higher Committee rejected it." So the Arab's attacked and got their butts kicked.
BTW speaking of your beloved Palestine, would Helen Thomas have been allowed to speak her opinion? In case you are too uninformed, the answer is NO.

helen thomas literally said nothing wrong. israel was founded on force by people from somewhere else. not on law. not on justice. not on democracy: on force and power. if these people from somewhere else were kurds or south african bauers or or corsicans, nobody would be in doubt who was the invader. european colonialism is colonialism even for european jews. after 100 years the french went back. after 100 years these invaders will be history too. if israel wants to survive as israel, it has to stop killing palestinians. no country has a god given right to survive. not milosevic's serbia, not not stalin's soviet union. not the USA's kingdom in Iran. not afghanistan in any of its reincarnations. not south vietnam. not sikkim. not south sahara. not hadramouth. not karadizc's srbska. time will tell, but thomas was right on target.

South African Bauers, USA's kingdom in Iran, are you serious....there is nothing more frightening then ignorance in action and this site is drowning in it.!!...The anti Israel/Zionist drivel that emanates from Huffpo is symptomatic of the hate/ racism of the left. LOL...I love to see you Peabrain/Boneheads get upset!.....watch out for those Bauers!!

I agree with the first comment. The media is heavily biased pro-Israeli, and worse, anyone who speaks even the mildest critical comment is hounded out of office or forced into retirement.

Israel is oppressive and should never have been created on the backs of the Palestinian peoples.

What is REALLY sad here in this supposedly free country is that NOBODY is allowed to question the wisdom of impossing a European garrison state based on a European religoius myth, in the heart of the Arab world by force of arms. What ever else can be said about the state Israel, there is no doubt that their proponets here in the U.S. have WAY too much power to control the course of OUR politcal debate.

"The Arab world" what an odd view of history, that there was an "Arab world" at the time modern Israel was concieved. It might be more accurate to "question the wisdom of imposing a European" Arab world on a decaying Turkish hegemony. I suggest you read a book. Maybe a history book. Maybe a history book written by a professional historian. Actually, a fairly interesting one, with a general-audience tone is "A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East" Then you could write comments that didn't partake the tone . . . well of a vast ignorance is putting it kindly. No, we are not tools of a vast Jewish conspiracy. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was a forgery, with not a scintilla of truth behind it. Lawrence of Arabia is mostly fiction. And a lot of the mess in the Middle East has to do with the prevalence of just such nonsense among the British policy-makers after the end of the First World War.

Everybody has a "history" and an army of "professional historians" they can choose to believe. The bottom line is the founders of modern Israel were largely traumatized european refugees who came ashore with expressed purpose of displacing the people who had been living there under various imperial civil authorities for the past 1500 years. Their claim to the land was based on tribal religious mythology that anointed them god's chosen people, which implicitly made all others inferior.

Frankly I could give a rat's behind who lives in Jerusalem. I DON"T CARE WHO IS RIGHT OR WRONG AT THIS POINT. If the jews ARE God's chosen people let HIM facilitate their murderous rampages, let HIM pay for their weapons. I'm tired of it, NOT ON MY DIME thank you very much.

"In the incident under discussion, Helen Thomas clearly misspoke."

No she didn't. I misspoke recently when I meant to say Philadelphia but instead said Pittsburgh.

She said something she now regrets, but she didn't misspeak.

This was not a mistake. Not in the least.
What she said was terrible. She is a reporter and after all these years has confirmed what many already suspected. She has never been unbiased. She is a bigot.

IF SOME of the Jewish people INSIST on conflating their religion and or ethnic identity with the earthly and often brutal state of Israel, they are INVITING upon themselves the scorn the proponents and apologists of every other brutally lethal racist theocratic state on this planet deserves.

The idea that Israel is exempt from the normal expectations of a civilized society "because they are surrounded by enemies" is an example of somebody complaining about a circumstance they created for themselves. They threw themselves upon those unfriendly shores and forcefully dispossessed millions of the local inhabitants, all in the course of my life time. They boldly declared some biblical "right to exist" that supersedes the rights of all others and excusing any expedient brutality required to secure their il-advised foothold in the heart of the Arab world.

The right of ANY state to exist is predicated its ability to come to terms with its neighbors. You either have to bomb them into extinction or develop mutually beneficial and mutually respectful relationships. Israel's claim she has tried to do the latter is at clear variance with her long stated goals, her demonstrated history and her civic practice on every level. Her claim that she is, through no fault of her own, surrounded by 140,000,000 morally defective, intellectually inferior neighbors who must be dealt with by brutal force "because it's all they understand" is the classic song of all European racist endeavors visited on the third world.

Well said. What Israel is doing to the Palestinians is morally (immorally) equivalent to what Europeans did to the native peoples of America. What the Israelis claim by biblical right America claimed as manifest destiny. Both nations justify their deplorable acts as all in divine order. What hubris! America and Israel are cut from the same coarse cloth.

Why do I have the feeling that Helen Thomas' distinguished career is NOT over at this point? Yes, she's 89, and she's probably become a bit cranky, and maybe deservedly so --- as I get older, I find that like my late mother, I'm inclined to say what I want, do what I want, wear what I want and eat and drink what I want, because you never know, the opportunity to do all those things that you didn't do might be snuffed out by a speeding car that doesn't brake for senior citizens ...

Helen Thomas is a brilliant journalist --- one of the people who inspired me to work in the business for 30 years. While she won't be covering the White House anymore, I'll bet there are plenty of people in the news business who will invite her to do guest commentary on whatever subject she pleases. It's too bad that this incident is a negative spot on her otherwise very professional career, but she'll survive it and all the people who are faking offense and using this minor incident to further their own agendas will be long forgotten when Ms. Thomas' career REALLY is over.

This country needs more Helen Thomas'. We Americans have been indoctrinated to believe that Israel can do no wrong. We need to understand that the Palestinians are human beings also, and they are receiving treatment at the hands of Israel that is reminiscent of the treatment of Native Americans at the hands of the whites.

Israel is the biggest obstacle to peace in the Middle East. America should demand that they return to their 1967 borders, and withhold the $10 million dollars + per day American aid until they do so. This has been half-heartedly threatened by other administrations in the past, but never carried out, if they had, 911 would probably have never happened.
