The CNN Debate: GOP Rightward Shift on Display

Posted: 06/18/11 12:26 PM ET

Even with their incomplete field of candidates, it was interesting to tune into CNN's Republican presidential debate last week. What came through quite clearly was how far to the right the GOP has drifted, a fact that will not change even in the unlikely case that a "star" emerges to rescue the party (especially since the "star" of the moment, Rick Perry, is merely a taller, more Texan and charismatic version of the rest of the current field of candidates).

This rightward drift came into sharp focus in responses to two questions asked during the debate.

At one point in the debate, an audience member, a long-time Republican leader in New Hampshire, after making clear that he was a moderate, non-ideological, mainstream Republican, asked the candidates for assurance that they would "have a balanced approach to governing to solve our serious problems."

Either ignoring the question or choosing to deliberately slight the questioner, each of the candidates who responded focused on burnishing their ideological credentials and paying homage to the Tea Party.

This, of course, is the problem facing today's Republican Party. There is no question that the Tea Party and its fervid opposition to the President and his agenda energized Republicans, helping them regain control of Congress in 2010. Emboldened by their success, the Tea Party has continued to flex its muscles, threatening to be the "kingmakers" in the Republican primaries. Hence, the candidates are loathe to distance themselves from this movement.

But while the presidential primaries, like midterm Congressional contests, are notoriously low turnout elections drawing support from the "fired up" party faithful, presidential elections are a different story. In these contests, more moderate and independent voters often determine the outcome, and if the New Hampshire questioner is any indication of the mood of this group, they are frightened by the Tea Party and looking for non-ideological problem-solving approaches to governance. It may very well be that in the process of ingratiating themselves with the groups they need to win the primaries, Republicans will damage their ability to compete in the November 2012 general election.

Another disturbing example of this Republican drift toward extremism came in response to a question about whether or not the candidates would be comfortable having a Muslim American serve in their Administration. The question first went to Herman Cain, who had on a previous occasion indicated that he would "not be comfortable with a Muslim." In response, he elaborated on his views, saying his concern with Muslims was prompted by the concern that they "are the ones trying to kill us" and weirdly inserting that he did "not believe in Shariah law." He then went on to insist that he would single out Muslims for a pledge of loyalty to the U.S. before considering them for government service.

Newt Gingrich chimed in, adding that he believed that a loyalty oath for Muslims seeking to work in government was a good idea because, despite its being unpopular, "we did this in dealing with Nazis and... with the communists... we have got to have the guts to stand up and say 'no.'"

While Michele Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum were not asked to respond to this question, they have all been on the record making equally shameful comments about Muslims and raising fears about Shariah law.

Only Mitt Romney, already on the defensive because of his Mormon faith, offered a constructive comment. After paying lip-service to the anti-Shariah law mindset, saying that "we're not going to have Shariah law applied in U.S. courts," he went on to add that "we recognize that people of all faiths are welcome in this country. Our nation was founded on a principle of religious tolerance."

What was especially disturbing about this particular exchange was the silence of GOP leaders in the days that followed the debate. Their refusal to condemn these displays of bigotry and intolerance only adds to the concern that the party is courting extremist currents and, as a result, has continued on a dangerous rightward drift.

"I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice!" -- GOP Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, 1963

LBJ defeated Goldwater the following year in a landslide.

Let's hope history continues to repeat itself!

I'm curious as to how long it will be before voters realize that conservative policy consistently fails. They have not proposed one new idea towards how to approach the issues they hold most dear. Instead we hear the same old mantras about cutting taxes and cutting spending and getting government out of our lives (unless it is to enforce a biblical mandate.) They have been pounding on the same ideas for 40 years and at some point someone should realize that they need a new platform to get hysterical about.

How pathetic is Gingrich with his 'loyalty oath' garbage? Can he not comprehend that someone seeking to infiltrate our Government might actually, I don't know, LIE about it?

Newt's next big announcement...his plan to eliminate the TSA and make all Muslim passengers swear on the Holy Bible not to bring weapons or explosives onto the plane.

Shift? Drift? The Republican party has been sprinting rightward for thirty years. On the whole, it hasn't hurt them much with swing (i.e. not-paying-attention) voters. Yes, there were Democratic gains in 06 and 08, but then a Republican landslide last year. They're not taking this presidential election very seriously, presumably because they don't want to deal with the disadvantages of running against an incumbent. But they'll do ok in congressional elections again, and they'll have a strong candidate in 2016.

In any other country in the world, they would be a fringe party with a handful of seats in parliament. Our system is broken.

I believe the big problem is that the number of committed-to-voting liberals is less than the number of committed-to-voting conservatives. America is a Center Left country BUT the conservatives can dependably get their vote out every two years.

A lot of liberals and independents simply don't believe in voting or that it's a waste of time.

They certainly do better at turnout. It's not so much a difference in whether they believe in voting, though.

Liberalism is reasonable, so it doesn't inspire fanaticism. Groups with crazy views and practices will get their followers to quit their jobs, sell all their assets and give the money to the cult leader, to help spread the message that the world is about to end. On the other hand, if you think that tomorrow will be another day, you don't run around shouting about the fact that the world isn't ending.

Let's see....
You got a multi-millionaire who wants to identify with the unemployed by saying he's "one of them"
You got another guy who wants to secede from the Union
And you got a guy who will be older than Ronald Reagan was when he LEFT office when he enters.

And these are the RATIONAL Republicans.

It seems republicans have painted themselves into a corner they can't get out of, that will destroy any hope they may have in the presidential race, and probably lose them the house and seats in the senate. Their agenda seems to be to attack working people by destroying the ability to negotiate labor issues. End medicare, and cut social security. Give tax breaks to the wealthiest among us and lower corporate taxes. Making mortgage down payments unreachable for middle class families. And passing ridiculous laws based on religious beliefs. It doesn't seem to me that they are expanding their voting block. In fact it seems it is diminishing to Fox viewers only.

Agreed. The religious right talks a lot about freedom but its goal is to limit ours. Rick Perry gave a political speech that was more like a preacher delivering a sermon and the GOP loved it. (And of course the news media never talks about the dismal state of Texas when it comes to education, health, etc., which the GOP is planning for the rest of us.)

one thing is clear the GOP is the enemy . . . and let's hope they destroy themselves with the electorate big time . . . .

If the GOP is really moving further to the right then they wouldn't be supporting expanding Medicare...but that is exactly what GW Bush did! Medicare Part D was passed by Republicans. And even though they make a big fuss about extending unemployment payments have they ever NOT done so? No.

So, don't confuse the theatre for policy. The policies, what actually gets done, by the two parties is identical! The GOP and the Democrats are both owned by Wall Street. So they will do nothing to offend their masters. Everything else is just for show.

They like big government as long as the huge corporations profit from it. And the rest of us get screwed is an added bonus. That's what Medicare Part D did.

Americans are not as right wing as the republican party is today . If the GOP thinks they can win with their plans for the future then Good Luck to them , I will be rooting for them to keep it up . The Crazier they get then the better chance of the President winning a second term .

Obama won more than squat. He got more American votes than any person in history.

But then again you also admit that Reagan didn't win squat in 1980 because the economy was bad. And it's true, People voted AGAINST Carter not for Reagan. I remember it well.

Or the Independents in CA who elected a complete slate of State level Dems in 2010?

No. You do not understand. It is the socialist demo party the one that has gone hard left with their big gov, taxation, control, world imperialism, civil liberty restrictions, destruction of national borders and integrity etc. The republican party has remained the same. The Tea Party faction is simply a reaction to the left swing by the democrat socialists. Like the Yin and Yang, the country seeks balance.

There you go throwing around terms that you don't understand. Obama admin has stayed same course republicans have been on for 30 years, particular following Bush43 in all things you mentioned.
Tea Party is a libertarian string of the republican party that is in fashion now so Koch Bros and ilk can continue to defund govt and privatize its functions.

And they keep dangling poor aborted babies, Sharia Law, creeping socialism, in front of the voters... oh and gay marriage too. You know the progressives want to destroy American families.

I think a new party called the secular party should be created. Once they take office and get rid of all religious influence in government, its institutions including the courts, and schools, after 8 years things can return to a more rational and reasonable state.

well NOW HERE THIS ......

George Washington one of our FOUNDING FATHERS said this ..... on Liberals and Liberalism

“As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality.”
