It's Time to Pass the DREAM Act

Posted: 06/16/2012 9:31 am

I woke up yesterday to the following text from one of my DREAMer students: "Have you seen the news???! I am speechless!" Since it was 7 a.m., and I had just returned from presenting on the subject of undocumented students at the International Diversity Conference in Canada the night before, no--I had not seen the news. When I did, I too was speechless. I was also relieved, teary-eyed, excited, and just plain happy.

I realize that this policy shift is not perfect; it does not provide a legal pathway to citizenship or permanent residency. However, it does provide deportation relief to approximately 800,000 young adults who were brought to this country at a young age, a decision that they held little, if any, power to influence. It also provides them with the ability to work legally, to provide for themselves and their families, and to contribute to the U.S. via tax revenue.

This means that my undocumented students no longer have to worry about the immigration raids that sometimes surprise us all with their police-state ferocity. This means that my undocumented students can breathe a little easier when they go through airport security on their way to the colleges they attend. This means that maybe, just maybe, the hard work and advocacy efforts of all DREAMers will pay off, and we may finally see the federal DREAM Act passed.

When the DREAM Act was originally introduced in 2001, it enjoyed support from both parties (Senator Orrin Hatch, a Republican from Utah, first introduced it, along with Senator Richard Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois). But politicians have recently employed immigration as a wedge issue, using undocumented young adults as pawns in their vitriolic, rhetorical games.

It is time we place bi-partisan politics aside when it comes to immigration reform. The United States was founded on the belief that all human beings are born with "inalienable rights -- that among these rights are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." We, as a nation, cannot expect other countries to accept democracy as the highest form of government until we do what is just in our own country. If politicians fail to pass the DREAM Act, they will allow a permanent underclass to form and languish in the United States, a notion that runs counter to the core of our democratic ideals.

Undocumented young adults should not have to suffer indefinitely from the choice their parents made to bring them to this country. They had no power to affect that decision at that time, nor do they have a current legal pathway to allow them to change their undocumented statuses. For all intents and purposes, these young adults are Americans. They want to join the military, attend college, have a meaningful career, and contribute to the United States. While today's policy change is a step in the right direction, and many individuals, including myself, enthusiastically applaud President Obama's decision, it still leaves DREAMers in legal limbo land. It is time to pass the DREAM Act and give undocumented young adults the opportunity to become full, legal residents and citizens of the United States.

NO LET THEM GO BACK TO WHERE THEY WERE BORN AND APPLY LEGALLY. Let them use asians as an example. Come here legally if you want respect, and pay your own bills not like your parents who just took.........

There is some goods news this morning folks: Asians are now outpacing latinos as the fastest growing population in America!!! And, Asians are the best educated and have the highest income of any racial or ethnic group in America. Cities with large Asian populations(Irvine California for one)have the lowest crime rates of other cities. Irvine has had the lowest crime rate of any American city for several years running. This is all good news for the future of America and your children and grand children. Yippee!

The American taxpayers ARE NOT responsible for these kids!!!! If I went to Mexico illegally with a child born in America, do you REALLY think that the Mexican government would welcome this child and then provide a complete education for them not to mention healthcare and a myriad other things that America has been providing for kids of illegal Mexicans for decades?? It is NOT up to me to provide for these children!! Gosh, this mindset that America is the cause of the illegal's issues is just beyond comprehension for many of us. The parents are the ones to blame for the unfortunate situation these kids are in now that "the worm has turned" as far as public opinion regarding illegals. The parents brought these kids knowing full well that at any time they could be caught as illegals and deported back to Mexico. THEY put their kids in danger....NOT America's immigration laws.
11:39 AM on 06/19/2012
Why would you deport children who are trying to make something of themselves and contribute to society?
11:40 AM on 06/19/2012
It's one of the reasons America is BETTER than Mexico.

They don't want to become legal citizens of America. This is NOT a priority for them at all.

"Undocumented young adults should not have to suffer indefinitely from the choice their parents made to bring them to this country. They had no power to affect that decision at that time, nor do they have a current legal pathway to allow them to change their undocumented statuses." They DID have an opportunity to change their status! When they hit age 18 yrs, they had 6 months to return to their home countries and file for admission visa, without facing the 10 yr bar on re-entry. THEY did NOT do this. NOT my fault. NOT my country's fault.
11:44 AM on 06/19/2012
Why make them go through all that? They are here already! You want them to jump through pointless hoops, without any guarantee they'll be able to come back, instead of using that time to contribute to society?

WHY? Because they are in this country illegally, & this is the way to correct it! They can't wait for the Federal funds so they can go to college on the Tax payers "dime", just like they did for K-12.

What's up with all the hate towards undocumented people? WHY is there so much anger, I would love to know why you hate them so much. What are your REASONS????

Don't hate them- Just don't want a bunch of blatant law breakers in OUR society. Pay ANY attention to HOW much Money is SPENT on illegal aliens entitlements? WE are in dire straits financially, and need 12-20 MILLION illegal aliens to feed, educate, house, provide medical care, etc-FOR FREE- Like this country needs a bigger deficit. Less than 5% of illegal aliens work in agriculture, but 20% works in Construction- TRY to tell some unemployed American construction workers that illegal aliens "only" take jobs that Americans don't want!
01:42 AM on 06/18/2012
There will be home less people regardless of the race. IF you're lazy you won't get anywhere. SO don't hate immigrants. We just want a better life.
11:47 AM on 06/19/2012
Bigger deficit? What do you call deporting contributors to society after providing them with all of the things you mentioned? And why SHOULD they only get the jobs Americans don't want? That's sick.

Please don't sugar coat it. You mean Illegal Aliens. If they love this country so much why didn't the parents, and children when older become Legal? and while your at it, ask someone who has went to proper channels to become legal how they feel about it. I'm sure their response will not be to nice.

11 years ago, when The DREAM Act for Illegals was first introduced by a bi-partisan effort into the U.S. Congress ~

> The U.S. Unemployment Rate was not 8.2% for the previous 41 months.
> There were not 12.6 million U.S. Citizens out of work for the previous 41 months.

The severely flawed DREAM Act for Illegals has been around for 11 years in the U.S. Congress ~ failing passage on 12 different occasions ~ just not resonating with the U.S. Taxpayer

Up until yesterday ~ Obama was forceably deporting illegals, 1 each & every 79 seconds, 24/7

Today ~ Obama sold out the illegal DREAMers with a program of work permits & military service. NO Pathway to Citizenship & NO post-secondary education benefits.

All illegal DREAMers are destined to low-paid 2-yr temporary status, no different than H2A guest workers.

Don't forget all the loopholes in the DREAM Act proposed so far!
11:49 AM on 06/19/2012
It's so they can stay here without getting deported. I will be very upset if Obama doesn't push for the DREAM act once he's in but I know FOR SURE Mitt Romney would derail it completely.

Democrats have not a hint of this dream act and its repercussions including this liberal story teller.who authored these lies...Once you give citizenship to these people you give citizenship to there parents.. grand parents.. aunts..uncles nephews and cousins. and in the fine print of this dream act they all are allowed in his nation once any member of there family becomes legal swelling the population to over 500 milion people within four or five short years...yet demos have not a clue..none;;all they see is voters period..

Just as when (R) Ronald Reagan granted FREE U.S. Citizenship to 3 million illegals ~ they, in turn daisy chained their immediate family members resulting in an additional 6 million foreign nationals becoming Naturalized U.S. Citizens
05:01 PM on 06/17/2012
They can't. Obama won't let that happen, he said only students who graduate or serve military.

I do not like to mention this story much but I'll let the opponents hear the fact.
My friend was forced to come to the US by her parents. Years later, can't go to University due to her visa. Illegal but she even tried to marry someone (within agreement) for a visa. Did not work out, she was force to go back to her country. Yes, back to her country. Okay, First, why can't a young smart woman go to university? Second, marrying someone is not a joke. Third, back to her country? what country ? which country is her Own country? the country where she doesn't know anyone? come on! she has never been there ever since she was force to come to the US at very young age. Now forced to go back to the country.

Now, what was the outcome? She committed a suicide. She is not here anymore. Why? what did she do wrong. can you tell me please? why did she go back wait, what is the meaning of going back? when she grew up here in the US? come on.

People lived here more than 10years still with f1 visa paying $6000 extra for university. All their family in the US with different visa but has to leave when graduate. Can one get a job?? Do you know how hard it is to be hired with that Visa? (OPT doesn't help of too long) We are not any different from each other.

I am sorry that your friend committed suicide. I have no idea how long she was in this country. You are unclear if her parents who dragged her into the USA were sent home, or are still here. I'd like to see a "happy" resolution to this kind of disaster, but Amnesty sends the wrong message: Come into this country, illegally, break OUR laws, and eventually, ALL will be forgiven, with an amnesty. JUST like has been done SEVEN times in the past. WHY does every country have the right to secure their borders, except the USA? I'd settle for giving DREAMERS legal residency- NOT citizenship. Citizenship means the DREAMERS can "unify" the family, & make the people who brought them here illegally, also citizens. NO WAY.
