Caroline Kennedy? Thanks But No Thanks

Everyone seems to be salivating because Caroline Kennedy called David Paterson and is apparently interested in the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton.

It's a truly terrible idea.

Her leadership could have been really helpful when we were trying to keep the progressive lights on and getting the stuffing beaten out of us by a very well-financed right wing for the past eight years.  But when things were tough, she was nowhere to be found.

Now that the Democrats are in power, she'd like to come in at the top.  We have absolutely no idea if she's qualified, or whether she can take the media blast furnace of being a Kennedy in public life.  She's certainly shown no appetite for it in the past.  She'll have a target on her back and if she can't take it, if she crumbles, she will become a rallying point that the right will easily organize around.

The woman has never run for office in her life.  We have no idea how she'd fare on the campaign trail, or how well she could stand up to the electoral process.  She simply picks up the phone and lets it be known that she just might be up for having one of the highest offices in the land handed to her because -- well, because why?  Because her uncle once held the seat?  Because she's a Kennedy?  Because she took part as a child in the public's romantic dreams of Camelot?  I'm not quite sure.

There's an enormous problem in the Senate right now with entitlement, with the sense that its members owe their allegiance to each other and not to the public.  Witness Joe Lieberman's recent confirmation of Homeland Security Chairman, when Democratic Senators circled the wagons and helped him hold on to power -- despite the fact that he refused to hold hearings into the government's response to Hurricane Katrina and protected billions of dollars in contractor graft from being investigated.

Nobody, including Howard Dean, seemed to think that his performance record as head of the Committee was something that should even be taken into consideration.

The new Senate is going to face incredible challenges in the upcoming session, and we're lucky this year that it will be infused with some much-needed new blood.  It's not a place for anyone to be wearing political training wheels.

For what it's worth, I think David Paterson should appoint himself.   He's quite the wonk, in a way that would make him better suited for being a senator than being a governor.  With Obama gone from the Senate and Blagojevich's future a total crapshoot, there are no African Americans in the Senate.

One president, zero senators -- neither diverse nor representative.

Clinton's seat will be up for grabs in 2010 and 2012.  That means, as George Stepanopoulos pointed out on This Week today, that the person who wants it will have to raise close to $100 million to hold it. Caroline Kennedy would certainly have the fundraising prowess to do that.  Let her hit the road now, press the flesh, meet the public and start auditioning for New York voters.   It could be a tough year for Democrats in 2010.  It would be good to have her in the game.

In the mean time, I'm glad she had fun being part of a winning campaign in a year that saw a rather rosy playing field for Democrats.  But simply being well-known and a member of the "American nobility" in a celebrity-driven society shouldn't be enough to axiomatically entitle her to be a member of the US Senate.

There are so many more qualified and experienced people. People who don't just have progressive ideals, but who have actually worked toward those ideals. People who've accomplished something.

There are a host of experienced, qualified, committed talented people who could be considered for this position. Cuomo is one (and he's demonstrated an ability to get things done. Others are Byron Brown, Carolyn Maloney, Elizabeth Holtzman, Thomas Suozzi, Nydia Velazquez, Kirsten Gillibrand, Steve Israel.

There's no need to go with a neophyte. No need to pretend to be impressed with a non-practicing attorney, co-author of a few books, who was appointed by Mayor Bloomberg for a one-day-a-week fundraising position for the NYC public schools. We can go with someone qualified.

She should be disallowed from the seat because she isn't entitled to it. She doesn't deserve to be in politics now because she wasn't in politics earlier than now. She shouldn't get the appointment to it because she would be most likely to win in an election for it. She's the only person who could fundraise enough to keep it, so Paterson should give it to himself.

Yeah, I guess we could just hand it over to the Republicans, but I'd really rather not.

If the key word in your essay is "serving your folks well" which other family in America has invested so much in blood and money? or is it the normal complex bash of women against women..

I think the issue that people have with Caroline Kennedy is the presumption that she can inherit a senate seat. Is this a democracy or is this an aristocracy.

Many Americans have lost fathers and uncles in the service of this country. Even now, orphans are growing up who have lost parents in the Iraq war. But these children will not be handed senate seats as a reward when they grow up.

And is it right that only the wealthy have access to run for office? The argument that wealthy people can only have the best of motives for running implies that anyone of honest means is a crook, and that offends me.

There are hundreds of elected officials in the state of New York. I cannot believe they are all dishonest and all unqualified. I think it is right for people to hope that one of them might be offered the opportunity to serve in a senate seat.

Then, in two years, if she's still interested, Caroline Kennedy can run for office and demonstrate that she believes she deserves to be senator on her own merits, and she values democracy and equality. I would be very impressed by that course of action.

I wish Robert Kennedy Jr. would be appointed. He has been a true activist for many years. I admire him greatly.

The question regarding David Patterson is this: where would he do the least damage? He's not qualified to be governor of New York, and unelectable as a U.S. Senator. For those reasons, there's some surface appeal to your suggestion that he appoint himself as interim senator. Beyond that, as a New Yorker I would be proud to have Caroline Kennedy as my representative in Washington.

This is all about idol worship.

I hope it goes to Kirsten Gillibrand or Carolyn Maloney.

Jane,Jane,Jane! Caroline may succeed where so many activists have failed or gotten compromised down that swerving political road. I think she will be excellent for the state and the nation. She can speak quietly while carrying a big stick and this may be even more effective.

She got on board when times were toughest and backed a little known Illinois Senator who stood little chance of being elected at first blush. It was a pretty good choice and her voice made a difference.

We need less gentry and more politicized working class people who can speak to the experience of millions of Americans who are being laid off , outsourced and unemployed. Otherwise they will be captured by the Palins and the evangelicals, for lack of representation.

She is a political novice. While that is possible points negative - as pointed out - I also think it's definite points positive. She does not hail from New York State's corrupt Democratic establishment. And she's not beholden to Wall St. - and likely will remain somewhat buffered in the future. Thanks to her name. That's not something we can say for Chuck Schumer.

Point well made and besides I am certain that if her mother were still alive, Jacqueline Kennedy would be begging her not to take the seat.
11:48 AM on 12/10/2008
As a New Yorker, I can say with certainty that not only would Jackie not want her to take the seat, but she would absolutely FORBID it! It is truly a shame that Jackie's fineness and keen sense of decorum did not get passed on to Caroline, despite all of Jackie's best efforts.

you being a new yorkers gives you no private insight into the mind of the many years deceased former first lady, nor any right to speak on her behalf.

Wait...lemme get your logic straight...because you are a new yorker so you have the inside scoop on Jackie-O? Let me guess. You also have a direct line to Sarah Jessica and the rest of the girls thoughts too? Geezuz

Caroline Kennedy would be perfect as ambassador to England, following in the footsteps of her Grandfather Kennedy, who served in that post in the 1940's.

This would actually make more sense, although given our security commitments with Britain, she doesn't seem particularly well-suited for this position either.

This idea that Caroline Kennedy should be appointed to Hillary Clinton's seat is just another example of the Senate's long history of nepotism. Although some people may consider Hillary Clinton's senatorial seat another example of familial connections, at least she had to run for office the first time. Appointing Kennedy is a bad idea.
09:42 AM on 12/10/2008
I remember when Caroline Kennedy was being interviewed once and she remarked on how great her father's speeches were. When the interviewer asked her to name her favorite, she got a blank stare on her face. She couldn't name one, not even the "Ask not" speech.

i totally agree, jane. this seems to me to be the celebrity-obsessed culture spilling over into our politics. There are a millions of different last names in this country. We have had enough Bush, Clinton, Kennedy, etc.
