-- Joseph Berger of the NYT reports on the "secret squads" that enforce modesty standards in Orthodox neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
-- Roman Catholic bishops in France recently released a document on LGBT relationships that is supportive of LGBT couples, though it does not advocate for same-sex marriage. "We are able to appreciate the desire for a commitment to fidelity in a love relationship: of a sincere attachment, of a deep caring, one for the other, and of a lasting bond" in same-sex relationships, the document says. -- In the U.K., Catholic leaders have also recently spoken about same-sex marriage. They say they "recognize that many same sex couples raise children in loving and caring homes" but that same-sex marriage "threatens subtly, but radically, to alter the meaning of marriage over time for everyone." -- Meanwhile, a group of scholars, religious thinkers and activists, including LGBT people, want to refocus the conversation on same-sex marriage to problems among married straight people. The coalition is headed by David Blankenhorn, who was a key witness on the anti-same sex marriage side of the Proposition 8 trial in California in 2010.
